Interesting things about the type of music we listen to…..

have to disagree there at parts.

tend to find a lot of metal fans hard working and exceptionally out going.

the trouble it's hard to analyse a fan base which is so diverse and wide spread -especially if you go by sub-genres and such (a cock rock fan compared against a black metal listener and so forth).

for the most part, it's a good study but, like most things of this ilk, it's limited and flawed by its methodolgy.
Looked at the questions and they don't leave my room for individual answers or opinions or even subgenres.

oh, well.

thanks for the post Bucko. :kickass:

This bit's good though: "a Metallica fan is far more likely to listen to Mahler than an indie kid is to give reggae a try. "Aside from their age difference, they're basically the same kind of person," he said. "Lots of heavy metal fans will tell you that they also like Wagner, because it's big, loud and brash. There's also a sense of theatre in both heavy rock and classical music, and I suspect that this is what they're really trying to get at when they listen. One of the most surprising things is the similarities between fans of classical music and heavy metal. They're both creative and at ease but not outgoing. "

Lots of metalheads do listen to other stuff, including classical music, while Mr Trendy-but-pretending-not-to-be-NME-reading-indie-listener-with-gay-hair-glasses-and-a-stripy-shirt-and-thin-tie never seems to deviate from what he thinks is cool.

Yeah, I agree, but the only thing is once you start allowing room for individual answers you increase exponentially the amount of work needed to analyse the results.... You'd then have to scale the individual answers, etc, looking for trends between genres etc etc. Would be good, but would be much harder :)

true.

but that's the problem with such studies.

there are always limitations due to time and budget, so they have to make broader conclusions and such.

but at least someone is saying positive things about metal fans and not the usually stuff that gets trotted out in the media when some who may once have brought a metal CD does something wrong.

same with video games and such.

Even if you had all the time and money in the world you're always going to have your studies limited in accuracy by the honesty, openness and co-operation of participants. Human behavioural studies in general have to be largely fudged to make up for holes and ambiguities in data. This is one reason I have so little confidence in fields like psychology which are based on shaky foundations yet try to pass themselves off as precise sciences.

The closest I'm aware of is "We Will Rock You" which I really wouldn't call metal (and I don't mean that in an elitist 'trve kvlt' way). I'd also dare say it's at LEAST as popular and well known as any given Britto song.

Of all the people in the music world I hate, Pink easily takes the cake. It will be an extremely happy day for me if I ever hear she has been tortured to death and had her corpse thrown to sharks.
