Is anybody NOT using the usual suspects (talking about amps) for metal tones?

Most of the metal tones seem to come from Rectifiers, 5150s or Engls. Some JVMs, JCM 800s and Randalls might show up here and there.
Is anybody using amps for metal tones that are not one of the usual suspects?
Lamb of God love their Mark IVs, I read somewhere that Opeth likes Plexis, Slipnot rocks with Orange Rockerverbs.
Is anybody using even more non-metal amps to get some interesting metal tones?

EDIT: Oops... this post should be in the Equipment forum, can somebody please move it?

diezel einstein !!

not really a metal amp, as its very unforgiving , hehe.
if you suck, this amp will let the world know, harhar.

i use it all the time, have 2 of them, one 6l6 and one el34 !

I use a Laney TF700 - as if it was already lacking in Teh Metalz, it also has yellow fur on the front of it

It's kinda fuzzy and loose, but I run an EQ in front of it set up to boost the volume and cut some of the lows. Then I stick another EQ in the loop and it doesn't sound too bad.

The main reason I keep it is because the clean channel is fantastic. With a valve distortion pedal can sound great.

ENGL Blackmore

Maybe considered metal more on this board, but in general people seem to from on the blackmore and ask "did you mean the fireball?"

I have a friend with a Fender 212R, believe it or not the crunch on that amp just blew me away.

I use the Peavey JSX. Often considered (incorrectly IMO) to not have enough gain for metal.

When my current major production is done I look forward to spending more time with it to get some metal samples done.

^Big +1.
I never understood the "JSX doesn't have enough gain" argument. Are people being serious when they say that? For fuck sake people, it's the signature amp of a guy that needs heaps of sustain, needs to be able to pull off screaming pinch harmonics and has to play 3 note per string legato patterns in his repertoire:loco: Chances are if it doesn't have enough gain for you, your technique fucking sucks, because Satch is able to make those legato runs sound smooth as butter, which suggest to me the amp has enough gain for ANYONE that plays death metal, thrash metal, groove metal technical metal, basically any kind of metal guys on this forum board are normally interested in.
If it doesn't have enough gain for you, it's because you probably play some super underground sludge metal or your technique is incredibly poor.

I can't think of a single time I've ever seen anyone here say the JSX is undergained ;) I happen to strongly dislike the character of its distortion (I find it metallic, clangy, and somewhat lifeless), but lacking in gain it is not! Oh, and the clean channel rules too, FWIW :loco:

I got some nice tones by running my Engl 620 preamp (not really non-metal though) into the clean channel input of a Kitty Hawk Junior Combo (which pretends to be some Dumble or Mark I type-of-thing). This sounded way better than running the preamp through my Marshall 6100 head or a Tube Poweramp.

It's a strange amp I think, definitely divided a lot of better. I think a lot of people do agree it does sound better than the XXX even if they aren't particularly fond of the JSX.
Personally I like all 3 of the big 3 Peavey amps (JSX, XXX which is the 3120 now I think) and the 6505), but of course not for the same reasons.
I absolutely despise the 'clean' channel of the 6505, but to be fair I'm not strictly a metal player and require pristine cleans because I play funk too.

Well, honestly, I don't think the Mark IV is an amp that isn't considered a usual suspect, I mean, do you think the Rectifer existed forever? What do you think people were using before the Recto came out? The Mark IV of course, so it's hardly uncommon and unusual. Of course, it's not as common as the Recto, but it's just wrong to lump it in with the really uncommon stuff.

hmm...tried it and must say I like the character (kinda like a less brutal more "tamed" 6505), but it's almost unusable for me cause of the shit lowend.
it's like the bass pot's center frequency is at the most unusable freq (like too high or so)...turn the bass up a bit and it's boomy and weird low-middy sounding, turn it down and it's too thin.
it's not flubby or anything (so a TS doesn't help), it's just this weird "drööööhn" that you can't get rid of without the amp sounding too thin

don't get me wrong, the character of the amp is nice, but it's not really usuable for a metalrecording due to the fucked up low end imo...I'd take a 6505 over the einstein any day

well we play 8 strings - lots of low end :-D
though our music is more rock orientated.
well yeah, diezels are known to have shitloads of low end going on,that most cabs can't really handle.
you seriously have to tweak the diezels and keep in mind that "volume" in the preamp section is basically the amount of compression. it took me over 1 year to finally get the feeling for setting up my einstein...

here is an example of a band that i recorded with my einstein,
if anyones interested. sorry, its only myspace quality...
but i cant give the song away, as i do not own the rights.
still -> i love the tone, and a lot of people ask me for this exact tone for their (metal) songs...

yeah, doesn't sound bad (I would never say the Einstein does sound bad), it's just the stupid center freq of the bassknob that makes it unusable for me.
not that it's got too much lowend or that the speaker can't handle it, just that the lowend controlled by the bass pot is more low mids and that that particular frequency is pretty "dröööhn". the depth works more like an actually bassknob frequencywise imo.

I'm using the Einstein on my bands current Demo, but I'm actually thinking about reamping it through 6505 now.
overall I really think the Einstein sounds very much like a 6505...just less brutal and more "kultiviert".
all a matter of taste I guess
