Is it wrong that I prefer the PodXT's tubescreamer to the maxon od808?

sorry... posted when pissed!!
what i meant was... out of the tubescreamers I've tried. The maxon 808 seems to Cut the low end the most!, whilst the Ibanez reissue mantains a bit more body while still delivering the tightness that we use t/s for.

Sorry, based on those clips above, all I can tell is that the OD 820 doesn't have the same amount of gain/drive as the Line6 TS, and that's about it. When matched, gain wise, one might come out on top still, but for now it's not really a fair comparison.

i havent checked the clips yet, but the responses seem to suggest what im finding. obviously it depends on the situation and its worth having both, but the focus of the mids seems to be the main difference (also the gain difference). as CJ said, its just another tool in the arsenal - sometimes it will be better, sometimes not.

But yeah, more gritty and more forward.

really? We own every good 808-type clone boost almost, and we've found that the Maxon 808 to be the LEAST of our faves.... think I've only used it on one record. sometimes it seems like it's not even DOING anything... i mean, of course it is, but when compared to the Ibby RI it's like night and day. Although the TS808 can be a bit MUCH sometimes, haha... kinda like the SD-1 can be a bit much...

Ibby TS808 and OD820 get the most love from me.... although the bog standard TS-9 does some cool stuff to the high-end too and cuts a SHIT TON of low-end....

+1 on this... should have level-matched by ear.... i know the podfarm ts is much more..... extreme than the real thing as far as what it'll do with the knobs just barely up...

But still the point is with the "same settings" as we all typically use the Pod came out on top. Jedd unless you personally are using different TS settings then the comparison is more then fair. The shootout was these 2 pieces of gear with the same settings.

No, if the POD was a model of the real TS he used, that'd be 'fair,' I guess. Regardless, they don't have the same saturation content, so you can't say that one is 'better' than the other, since the structure of it changes so much with/without the added gain.

Your logic is flawed in two ways - it implies that we'd set up the amplifiers gain the same way with both tubescreamers, which just isn't true. I would've turned up the amps gain with the OD820 using those settings, which is the other part you've got wrong; do you seriously leave your TS set to the same setting for every tone? Mine changes all the time, depending on how much gain I want from the amp and how much I want from the TS, as well as the difference in response you get from varying the balance between the gain and drive knobs (saturation held constant, you get a different effect with the gain up + drive down vs the gain down + drive up).

I guess it all comes down personal preference, which has been stated in previous posts. A person really doesn't have to go about the same things the same way another person does "just because". I mean, unless one wants to be a total asshole and ridicule them for not doing things the way they do it. That said, I rather like my Maxon Vintage Overdrive Pro. :Spin:

Edit: Also, I sometimes use the "Screamer" pedal on the Line 6 M9 sometimes when I'm too lazy to plug in the VOP 9. And yeah, they obviously are totally different beasts.

I understand where people who want a level matched version are coming from, but I chose to do it based on the settings so that there was no subjectivity involved. It's not a be all end all test, I just wanted to compare the character of the pedal I owned, versus the software I owned, and I put it up here so other people could listen if they wanted. That's all. :) I'd love to hear some tests comparing an 808 and the "screamer" matched level/saturation what have you, but mine's at the rehearsal space right now so it's up to someone else. ;)

Yeah... and the pickups you're using matter a hell of a lot too. With a sharp, bitey pickup like the EMG 81, you might want to use a slightly smoother sounding Tubescreamer like the OD-820. With something like the 85 or a warmer passive pickup, you might want to use a sharper sounding TS.

So, even with the gain matched, there's plenty of other variables to consider. Pickups, tubescreamer settings, amp, cab, amp settings...... it all works together, and the final result depends on how it all comes together. One quick example of one possible comparison isn't going to prove anything, guys.

It's all a question of taste, my brother.
Here's my case:

>I hate L6's sims, both TS and boost+eq, prefer a real TS instead.
> I hate the real maxon od808 compared to TSE808.

Beat that ;)
