Jam Master Jay murdered in recording studio

ozmagreed: hahaha
phimseto: ?
ozmagreed: the ol' posthumous aggrandization is in process
ozmagreed: CNN.com refers to Run-DMC as "the Beatles of rap music"
phimseto: oh lord
phimseto: i wouldn't say that
phimseto: more like the Beach Boys
phimseto: of Rap Music

early success, some big pop hits, but not much in the way of artistic merit.

really, hip-hop didn't get its artistic chops until gangsta rap. and you could totally see some early rap groups like de la soul struggling to lift it out the realm of simple party music.

Sunflower and Surf's Up are both pretty good, too. A few of the tracks get a little weird and/or creepy, but otherwise there's still lots of great music on em.

My exposure to the Beach Boys is limited to stuff like "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Be True To Your School", which I find to be pretty unartistic. I've never heard 'Pet Sounds'. I have heard that Brian Wilson was 100% of the Beach Boys' artistic part...but if Pet Sounds is just a bunch of Surfin'-U.S.A. type tracks, I stand by my derision. If it's a whole 'nother animal, though, then I can respect that. If someone burns me a copy I'll listen to it with an open mind. :)

Perhaps my biggest fault was relying on phimseto's opinion combined with my limited knowledge. That or posting this here instead of on the "Post something you think sucks that everyone will think you're dumb for hating here." thread.

I'd actually heard Pet Sounds was in the top five EVER, but I thought it was a Brian Wilson solo record (obviously, I'm poorly-informed). Somebody at a party once raved about how Brian Wilson solo was an insane genius (literally and figuratively).

Well, I still say Run-DMC were no "Beatles of rap".
