Jeff Loomis - Plains Of Oblivion???

Got it today.

Listened through once and that'll probably be it for me. No doubt the dude's talented as fuck, but shredfests just aren't my bag I guess. These songs lack feeling. It's all math and technicalities and speed with no substance or meaning. Even the tracks with vocals.

Wonder what John thinks about yet another Loomis thread

Same, there are a million little shredtards whos little sphincters are quivering over it, so good for them . I still <3 Christine Rhoads voice tho.

I've pre-ordered it, but if it really is a boring shred-fest like you said then I'm going to be disappointed. I'm interested in hearing how the songs with Christine Rhoads sound, but if those are bad also then there really isn't much new to expect from Jeff Loomis. The track with Ihsahn wasn't that great in my opinion, and Mercurial is hopefully the worst on the album. Ultimatum and Requiem were definitely cool to my shredtard ears (and little sphincter). How's the track with Chris Poland? That one seems very jazzy and different. And motherfucker, how do you still get advanced copies of all the coolest cds???

I used to do a metal radio show here in Seattle. I still have my login credentials for a couple of labels' promo download sites.

I don't like his stuff. Huge meh. Sure, if you're a musician you can appreciate the technical side, but I'm not. My loss maybe. [/opinion]

Everything I've heard from the new record I've heard before. He's getting betting technically, but the songs are all the same to me. Meh. :/

My pre-order arrived.

Like everything except Christines songs. She's nothing more than a good open mic bar singer.

Everything else is jaw dropping, but honestly, this guy needs Warrel more than Warrel needs him.

I didn't like the last one he did. Like most have said, he's very talented and no doubt can shred, but I'd rather have what he did in Nevermore (which because of that makes him one of my fav. guitarists).

Not exactly saying that Loomis does this but other shreds seem to think a song's musicality and reply value increases if they use different modes and scales and change the theory up. They think of everything so mechanical verses emotional. How is English different from Math? English and literature can convey feeling where Math doesn't (unless the problem sucks so hard that you can't solve it).

Loomis can release all the these shred albums, I don't care....but what made him fucking rad in Nevermore was that he had both sides of the spectrum, emotion and technicality. He was a shredder but he was also a great writer and wrote memorable, genius, melodic music.

I've been on a youtube, pandora, iTunes and record store hunt for any new band that will recapture the feeling of first finding megadeth or nevermore for the past few weeks. If there is anything this search has taught me, it's that the majority of any music out there is devoid of emotion and I'd say most of it lacks both emotion AND skill or technicality.

I'll take the new Loomis cd over 80% of everything else.

Despite what has been said about it I bought it today. I really like the album. As a guitarist its really impressive, but I find myself not really focusing on the individual notes... It becomes very atmospheric in its own way.

well altitudes is shredfan#1 around here so if he doesnt like it we're all fucked! its all up to you, dude!

:kickass:

Cd came in the mail today, and upon listening to it many times I have mixed feelings about it. Without writing a lengthy review that no one will read (unless someone is interested), I'll keep it short: With a few stand-out tracks, this album overall is not the best material Jeff has made. Track-for-track Zero Order Phase was a much better album. Parts to songs flowed and transitioned naturally, there were more varied instruments and tones, more atmospheric songs, and for the most part more thought-out guitar solos. This new album is good for what it is but the songs usually fall under the "shreddy and unmemorable" category.
