I figured everyone, Maidens and otherwise, would get a hoot out of this. She sent this letter to RS and they refused to publish it, so she released it on her own site.

----

I tried to find some cleverly worded way to express my disgust with your "Women in Rock" issue, but what i have to say is really quite simple: You guys are completely retarded.

By RS standards, Rock is no longer a style of music but a trendy costume to be whipped up by expensive stylists and slapped onto the latest pop tart barbie doll. Give a girl some tight pants and a spiky bracelet and POOF! She ROCKS!

Your poor choice of cover girls and featured artists brings to mind the Sports Illustrated swimsuit editions. There is nothing necessarily wrong with the breast-baring models inside..but we all understand that they have NOTHING TO DO WITH SPORTS--Which just might be offensive to women who are interested in sports or who might even be (gasp) real athletes.

Yes, Britney has a talented stylist and yes, somebody gave Shakira a Guns & Roses t-shirt to wear..but they ARE NOT NOW NOR WILL THEY EVER BE ROCK.

Maybe it's naive of me to expect any glimmer of rock'n'roll credibility OR respect for women from a magazine whose cover shot is regularly a naked underweight actress. The thing is , I AM a woman musician with a rock band, and as we all are I am STARVED for any little crumb of recognition that real women rockers might be thrown. So like a sucker I find myself short another five bucks ..and pissed enough to write my first letter to an editor. Avril Lavigne gets some studded accessories from Hot Topic so now she's "upholding the brazen tradition of teenage outrage"???!! Are you SERIOUS? And could someone please explain to me why people keep insisting on referring to PINK as rock? Wasn't she doing the white girl hip hop thing a minute ago? Yeah, she performed on the Aerosmith tribute show --big deal..she was on the Janet Jackson tribute show just before that--Whatever's trendy. WHO CARES. She's a Spice Girl reject...but I digress.

Jewel and Mandy friggin' Moore have full page features as Rock Icons...Meanwhile Joan Jett gets one line. ONE LINE. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, who have never stopped touring, recently did 10 days in the Middle East playing for the troops stationed in Afghanistan. In AFGHANISTAN, Joan would come onstage wearing a birkha, which she ripped off and stomped on before blazing through the purest and nastiest rock show ANYWHERE. But even in the RS WOMEN IN ROCK issue, a story like that gets ONE SENTENCE on the bottom of the last page of Random Notes.

Britney's Rock credentials? Well, she butchers the song "I Love Rock'n'Roll" on her latest record, and when asked about it the genius replies "Well, I've always loved Pat Benatar." And SHE is your Rock issue cover girl?? You should be REALLY embarrassed.

Sleater Kinney was the only rock group listed on the cover..and they got only half a page. Ashanti, the r&b back up singer who can't seem to do anything without "featuring Jah Rule," has two pages.

What about the Donnas? The Yeah Yeah Yeahs? The Distillers? A mag like RS has the power to shine important light on groups like these--instead they are afterthoughts, and that valuable spotlight is wasted on the same overexposed pop princesses WHO HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH ROCK.

In your own letter from the editor you have the hypocritical balls to say "rock radio won't touch female artists, while the pop factory keeps churning out soundalike clones, and ambitious musicians with something to say find themselves left out in the cold."

The pages that follow those words are a blatant display that Rolling Stone magazine is happily working for the factory now too.

If the issue had been called "Women in Music"..or maybe "Some Cute Girls with Top 10 Records out Right Now"..I would have no beef with it. Corny as it may sound, ROCK is something which is still meaningful and even sacred to some of us. Use the word "rock" in bold letters next to a picture of Britney Fucking Spears, and you're turning your whole publication into a joke...and an offensive joke at that.

Joan Jett

Thta's my girl :D I agree with averything that Joan have said except for Shakira. Yeah, Shakira last album is pop, but the other her albums released before the last one are rock. It's a shame that for her to get success in US she had to become blonde and make pop music album.

For those who are not in the US, I should point out that for the most part radio stations are now owned by a couple of conglomerates (ClearChannel being one of the largest). As good old Heavy Metal isn't in fashion at the moment; in most US cities you REALLY have to dig hard to find anyone who plays it (if you are lucky). Thank goodness for webradio!

I hear that a lot of the euro stations get stuck on the same short playlists too, but at least Metal gets a lot more promotion over there.

NuMetal gets a lot of airplay (even here in Nashville), but I can only stand that 'standard numetal vocalist clone' voice so long...

What happened to the rich variety we used to have? Ozzy sounds nothing like Dio (even though they sing the same tunes), and then there's Geoff Tate, our personal fave here Bruce Dickinson, Dee Snider, Ray Alder, and a plethora of other vocalists in metal that do not sound at all alike! Yes, there are a few common voice ranges in Metal (can't think of an example right now), but at least they didn't have to fit in a narrow mold as the NuMetal vocalists apparently do...

I'm glad to see Joan is still touring. It's too bad that the best she can usually hope for here in the states is a club tour. I find it upsetting that Lita Ford is still called the Queen of Metal, while she hasn't done anything in years. She may have deserved that title at one time, but there are a lot of other female vocalists from that era still releasing albums (Doro anyone?). Part of being a 'Queen' is being out in front leading by example, not turning your back on your fans just because the audience isn't big enough (translation: artist will never see royalties on album due to big label contract, so why try?).

Then there is Leather Leone. She completely bowed out of the music scene after "For Those Who Dare". Last I heard, she was happily employed as a veterinary assistant, with no desire whatsoever to start singing again.

Apparently us Metalheads are not making our wills sufficiently known to the big record companies here. Most of the stuff I buy now is on independent labels (mainly thru Amazon.com). Even the big Metal festivals here are having problems staying alive (with exceptions, most of them in SoCal and a couple of other places).

Sorry to rant like this, but Heavy Metal is dying the slow death here in the states, and despite the energies of a lot of individuals, big money is working against us not with us. I'm glad to see the Iron Maidens getting a lot of media attention (even if it is localized at the moment; I can't wait to see what happens after the Guitar World issue runs and the Livin' Large spot airs). I'm not suggesting that the Maidens will singlehandedly start a resurgence in Metal here in the US, but if one is coming, they certainly will be of help - assuming some other bands garner some new interest as well!

We all know the Maidens are very talented musicians. As soon as a lot more of the unwashed Metal masses get past the 'cuties in leather' kneejerk reaction and realize that... well this is going to be very interesting to watch!

Note to Phantom Blue... a new wave of interest is coming your way. As soon as that Maidens tribute album is done, get hopping!

And in case anyone missed this: the Amazon.com advantage program (to sell CDs and stuff).

A good way to get some exposure (and availability) to people that have never heard of you before. And you can make song clips available to peak their interest!

Yeah. I've told to ppl that thankfully here in Europe heavy metal is in good health comparing it to US were it seems is only surviving at most from the old bands and some of them are not playing Real metal.
But I feel the times are changing for good to hm.

Great letter. Thank God that someone has finally pointed out to the dumbasses of America the truth that we've all known. And as for Metal dying, your probably right, but I've got a feeling eventually people will be tired of hearing different people do the same shit with exact same sound, leading to a huge backlash against pop, rap, punk, and most of the other mainstream music of America, and turn to Metal, which like the phoenix shall rise from the ashes to live again. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes the idiots have taken over! Everything is catered to the lowest common denominator which is the majority. Between the fast food, fluoride, air pollution, pesticides in food and the subliminal brainwashing from TV commercial and various advertising that bombards us daily, people can't use their brains anymore.

There are opinions and there are facts.

Opinion- I like Dio Sabbath better than Ozzie. I like Bruce Dickinseon better than Paul D Anno.

Fact- Rap and hip hop is stupid! This is an undebatable fact. Same goes for most pop. And anyone that listens to rap and hip hop is not intelligent. This is a fact of life that can't be debated. This is music that is retarded, enjoyed by retards. Smart people with class do not listen to hip hop or rap. If you do listen to this music, you are not smart.

As I look through my old high school year book, I see girls wearing clothes that would seem quite conservative to now. I drive by my old high school now and I think I'm driving by a porn shoot. (Yes, I drive slowly by it around 3PM) But I don't know how these girls parents let them out of the house.

The children are our future, and the children now, who will be our future are over stimulated, uncreative social rejects that do not contain the brain power to appreciate the finer things in life. Not that Joan Jett's music was so great, but you know what I mean. Go and watch a morning cartoon. I feel like my head will explode from the over stimulation and then the commercials shown in between are nuts then you've got these 3D graphics bursting all over the place. Then the parents take the kid to the doctor saying he can't focus then put him on meds.

We need global sterilization until parents can get their act together. Bunch of hedonistic fucks! "What, I have to give up my life just because I have children? I can't still party?"

"NO YOU CAN'T! YOU DO GIVE UP YOUR LIFE OR YOU'RE NOT A PARENT! THAT'S THE FUCKING POINT"
