A New Day Yesterday Live is, you guessed it, a live document of blues prodigy Joe Bonamassa's previous tour across the USA. Putting forth the traditional southern hard rock ethos of extended solos, hard hitting riffwork and gritty, whiskey-drenched vocals, Joe Bonamassa's guitar skills are quite an intriguing proposition. Although he's unlikely to have ears piqued with interest at the originality of it all, this is a guitarist with quite an accomplished sense of songwriting. Think of Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, or even Lynrd Skynrd at their least cheesy. Joe Bonamassa has a knack for getting the foot tapping and cuts such as 'Miss You, Hate You' could have sat very comfortably across radio stations in the late 60s alongside Clapton's 'Layla' et al.

On top of Bonamassa's arthritis-inducing fretwork we have Eric Czar on bass, who's dextrous fingerwork provides an excellent offset to Bonamassa's lenghty guitar workouts, whilst Kenny Kramme is as solid a rock drummer as they come. Those of a more modern hard rock disposition may find the band's loose, retro stylee wearisome, but hearing rock blasted out with passion, fury and grade-A craftmanship, regardless of its apparent relevance to today's rather impotent rock scene, is always welcome to these ears and will thus always remain recommended.
