JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ ein irreführender Name, vermutet man dahinter doch vielmehr seelenlose Technikdemonstration oder überzogen lächerliches Power Metal Gepose. Nichts dergleichen ist der Fall. Vielmehr verbirgt sich hinter JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ eine fünfköpfige, kroatische Truppe die sich der avantgardten Spielweise des Schwarzmetalls verschrieben hat.
Die acht Kompositionen greifen kompositorisch nach den Sternen
Mit ESCAPE OF POZOJ erscheint das Zweitwerk des Quintetts in einer Neuauflage via Code666. Bereits 2009 wurde das 46-minütige Machwerk in Eigenregie veröffentlicht. Die 2011er Auflage wurde neue eingespielt, überarbeitet und optisch aufgewertet. Ein großer Aufwand seitens des Label, der eine hohe Erwartungshaltung heraufbeschwört. Dies können JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ nur bedingt erfüllen. ESPACE OF POZOJ ist zwar alles andere als alltäglich, zeigt sich vielerorts sogar erfrischend kreativ und neuartig, verliert sich aber viel zu schnell in Wiederholungen und Trägheit. Die acht Kompositionen greifen kompositorisch nach den Sternen, bleiben dabei aber stets nachvollziehbar und scheitern schlussendlich an sich selbst. Die Gruppe verarbeitet viele interessante Fragmente, überbeansprucht diese ab der Mitte des Werkes zunehmend. Verstärkt gesellt sich Füllmaterial hinzu, verwässert die an sich starken Kompositionen unnötig.

Escape of Pozoj es el compacto que pone fin a esta trilogía de la banda croata JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ, y debo reconocer que hasta ahora no había escuchado sobre este grupo pero, sincertamente, ha sido un gran descubrimiento dentro del Black Metal tan particular que suelen practicar bandas de Europa del este cómo, por ejemplo, NEGURA BUNGET.
Lo que envuelve tood este Escape of Pozoj es un sonido y ambiente realmente oscuro e hipnótico, cómo si fuera un viaje entre lo experimental y lo raw a las entrañas de un Pozoj. Un sonido orgánico que mezcla sus propios elementos con algunos detalles del Black Metal escandinavo, especialmente en algunos riffs tremolos que se confunden con detalles Folk o música clásica, algo que engrandece los cuidados ambientes de la formación croata y que hace que sus creaciones evoquen distintos sentimientos a medida que avanza este plástico, al igual que hacen las variadas voces pero que, en todo momento, son muy extremas, personales y emocionales, siendo de las mejores que he escuchado dentor del Metal extremo en un tiempo considerable.
JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ también utilizan algunos interesantes sintetizadores, tal y cómo podemos percibir en Vječno Robljem, resonando sobre el imponente y resonante bajo. Ésto otorga también una nueva profundidad a sus canciones.
JOHAN WOLFGANG POZOJ mezclan cómo nadie pasajes hipnóticos con los riffs y el Black Metal más abrasador y además, afortunadamente, con una línea de bajo bastante audible en casi todo momento, logrando que todo suene de forma orgánica y natural pero, sobretodo muy honesta. Apuesto que para todos aquellos que escuchéis este nuevo trabajo de la banda de Croacia, se convertirá en uno de vuestros preferidos durante un largo periodo de tiempo.
Ésto es autenticidad y sinceridad y lo demás son tonterías.

Dear god, what is this Escape of Pozoj for an album?! It has honestly taken me over 10 spins of the entire thing to get through to the essence of it. While at first sight, Johann Wolfgang Pozoj appears, with this album, to be yet another one that jumps on the avant-garde black metal bandwagon. But, to just hold on to that claim and disregard them as yet another band stepping out of the black metal confinements without any real conviction, would mean wronging J.W. Pozoj severely. This album is the second installment of a trilogy, and it is their fourth release to date. It is a re-recorded version of the original Escape of Pozoj, which was released two years ago. J.W. Pozoj initially released their music on their own account, but got picked up by the Italian label code 666. This is their second release on this label, preceded by Birth of Pozoj, the trilogy will most likely be concluded with an album called Return of Pozoj at the close of next year.
Escape of Pozoj opens, as so many self-proclaimed avant garde black metal bands with an ambient intro. No drums, just a haunting soundscape. The guitars are introduced for the first time about one minute into the song and they set the mood quite adequately for the entire album. Melancholy drips from every chord. While the album is supposedly about: the peak of fertility and growth, maturity and completely becoming real where the idea is fulfilling its purpose, the music would suggest otherwise. That is, unless reaching ones full potential and realizing what life is all about unequivocally brings upon a sense of melancholy as well.
Melancholy is a popular theme within black metal these days, depressive black metal bands are thriving and Agalloch copies shoot up from the ground like daisies (not the most obvious of comparisons, but not any less true for of it). Because of this inevitable layer of melancholy that lies atop the music, it is hard to look beyond and find what a truly splendid piece of music created here. Dissonant, hazy but most certainly well thought through. The various elements of the music, to me, at first appeared to be disharmonious, but nothing less is true. After a couple of spins, I realised that every switch in tempo that appears to make no sense is actually perfect in its own right. A perfect example of that is Song of Pozoj, where the bass line appears to follow a different pattern from the two guitar lines yet both manage to stay in tune with the drums.
The vocals are another rather unexpected element as well. The grunts are rather deep and sound hoarse, which is quite unusual when it comes to black metal. Whereas the spoken and scarce clean vocals remind me of Huppogrammos (Dordeduh and Negura Bunget) and Fulmineos (Negura Bunget), theyre obviously dissonant, but never truly out of key. That is impressive, given the chaotic structure of a song such as Careless are your souls, which blends searing guitars with a bass melody (lead by naught but cymbals that lay low in the mix), spoken word and haunting screams.
Should consider your interest in this band peaked, give Careless are your souls and I am the Forest a spin. Those tracks are two prime examples of what J.W. Pozoj is capable of: well defined and structured (yet chaotic)
avant-garde black metal. Escape of Pozoj as a whole is certainly recommended to fans of the less primitive side of black metal. It is intriguing, and takes some really thorough listening to get through to the core, but I can assure you that it is worth it. J.W. Pozoj is most certainly not just another avant-garde band simply for the hell of it, and I very much look forward to the conclusion of the trilogy, Return of Pozoj.

Possiamo considerare Escape Of Pozoj (2009) il degno successore di Birth Of Pozoj, sebbene cronologicamente quest'ultimo disco sia stato ri-registrato completamente agli inizi del 2011 e quindi fa comparire Escape.. come precedente ma in realtà il primo capitolo dell'oscura saga è datato 2007 e non conta due tracce come il suo gemello riassemblato quest'anno e recensito dal sottoscritto pochi mesi fa.
Escape.. è semplicemente marcio dentro, contiene una sorta di seguito nella storia buia e macchinosa che la band croata e riesce a farsi apprezzare ed ascoltare anche se con enormi difficoltà di digestione iniziale.
Avere tra le mani questa pubblicazione dei JWP significa dover far fronte ad un'oretta di completo squilibrio mentale e di composizioni musicali dissonanti e discordanti provenienti dal mondo del black metal ma che, in fondo, del suddetto genere musicale hanno ben poco tranne gli stilemi classici delle equalizzazioni tendenti al Lo Fi in qualche punto.
Del black metal i nostri hanno conservato l'anima più ambient e depressive ma, stavolta, al contrario di Birth... possiamo notare risalti più violenti e furiosi (la strumentale --- e Trpa se po Mesima ad esempio) intervallati da momenti più che avanguardisti.
Francamente lo trovo meno apprezzabile di Birth... ma pur sempre musica valida. Nel frattempo posso sempre attendere con curiosità il terzo (ed ultimo?) capitolo, chiamato Return Of Pozoj in vista per il prossimo anno.

Voici lhistoire dun groupe de black metal avant-gardiste nous venant tout droit de Samobor. Il sagit dune ville de la Croatie Centrale. Ce groupe, nommé Johann Wolfgang Pozoj, est fondé en 2004 par deux frères issus des groupes Intoxicate (hardcore/metal/punk) et Grob (black metal) ou «Grave» en slave. Alors pourquoi avoir choisi un nom aussi énigmatique ? Le groupe cache sous le nom de Pozoj, un dragon issu dun mythe (pré) Indo-Européens et des mythologies, des dérivations linguistique qui arriveront un peu plus tard. Le groupe est composé de cinq membres dont Filip Fabek-Guitar/Programming, Marko Balaban à la guitare, Ivan Borcic au chant, Slaven Milic à la basse/Guitare et Luka Kovac à la batterie. Leur discographie va sarticuler autour d'une suite logique, comprenant trois phases, relevant dune certaine philosophie et dun symbolisme portant sur lesprit. La première partie de leur trilogie sintitule Birth Of Pozoj (2006). Elle porte sur une idée qui na pas trouvé complètement sa forme et la naissance du dragon Pozoj qui symboliquement représente le début du cours du temps. La seconde partie se nommant Escape Of Pozoj (2009) représente le summum de la courbe de fertilité, de la croissance et de la maturité. En exprimant lidée dun total accomplissement où le dragon peut enfin prendre son envol et quitter la mère nature. Depuis 2004, le groupe, philosophe dans lâme, a vu sa notoriété grandir par ses albums hors du commun et en jouant dans des concerts locaux. Il sest vu proposé par le label italien Code 666 un remaniement et un réenregistrement de la trilogie complète avec le nouveau line-up. Ainsi, en 2011, nous nous retrouvons avec un réenregistrement plus moderne de lopus Birth Of Pozoj et Escape Of Pozoj. Ici nous allons parler du deuxième opus Escape Of Pozoj qui sortira le 14 novembre 2011.
Tout sexalte librement avec le prologue qui sintitule Prolog : Vječno Robljem. Le morceau donne libre court à limagination dont lintroduction est très obscure et mystérieuse. Un sampler dans les tons graves est utilisé pour donner ce côté tragique et sombre avec une ligne de guitare tout aussi calme que le reste. Vient par la suite sajouter le chant dIvan Borcic, tout aussi dramatique que la mélodie, avec une voix torturée. Cette fois, elle sera appuyée par larrivée dun son plus lourd et agressif de la part des guitares. La basse est quant à elle noyée par les guitares aux fortes distorsions et la batterie. Le titre Iz Grotla ivota exploite un peu plus un environnement malsain mêlant à celui-ci une touche délectro récurrente discrète. Cette touche électro donne au genre un aspect farfelu et unique. Dans la façon de faire, certains pourraient y retrouver le groupe Burzum mais du fait de lutilisation de sampler, le groupe réussit à sen différencier. Cependant le black metal reste une musique non conventionnelle de base alors il est normal que certaines expérimentations aient lieu avec des sonorités comme celles de Johann Wolfgang Pozoj. Le côté avant-gardiste de la musique se retrouve aussi dans le troisième titre ---(instrumental). Un morceau totalement dédié à lambiance avec en introduction, un rappel darrangement utilisant un son qui peut nous faire penser à une goutte d'eau tombant au fin fond des abysses. Les guitares du début jusquà la fin exécuteront des riffs dissonants avec une importante distorsion. Ceux-ci prendront un certain élan avec une batterie qui se déchaîne et donnera un nouvel essor au morceau. Tout au long de lalbum, on retrouvera une énergie alliée à un son et des expérimentations qui font nous évader au plus profond de nous même. Le chant pourrait se rapprocher de celui de Sakis Tolis de Rotting Christ. Un titre en particulier attire notre attention, il sagit de Careless Are Your Soul. Très enrichissant dans les sonorités que lon pourrait retrouver en Croatie. Le chant est ici parlé et crié à tour de rôle. Il sagit dun titre tourmenté et mouvementé par ce jeu de voix pour lequel se prend Ivan Borcic. Les guitares accompagnent celui-ci avec autant de puissance dans lexécution. Le groupe aime tester de nouveaux sons en créant à chaque fois une nouvelle ambiance qui nous plonge dans des émotions contrastées alliant la sérénité, le stress et langoisse.
En 8 titres, tant démotions partagées relèvent dun long travail de composition et dinterprétation. Le dernier titre qui sappelle Prstima Prelazim Preko Tvoga Tijela... clouera, avec ses quelques 13 minutes, un opus dune qualité rare. Le morceau peut avoir un effet reposant après une telle orgie instrumentale et vocale. Tout est calme que ce soit pour les guitares ou pour le chant. Nous pouvons apprécier les moments de calme et repenser à toutes les étapes passées précédemment à travers tous ces titres.
La pochette est toute aussi travaillée que la musique. Elle aborde une certaine complexité qui tourne autour dun cercle comprenant différents éléments. Lextérieur du cercle pourrait sapparenter à la croûte terrestre. Mais il sagit de montagnes, peut-être sagit-il des montagnes de Croatie ? Le reste relève de la création et de lexistence sur terre avec des fragments dADN entourant tous ces éléments.
Le groupe nous offre un souffle de nouveauté avec un black metal avant-gardiste nhésitant pas à utilisé diverses possibilités sonores intéressantes qui nous permettent de découvrir un autre aspect de ce monde élitiste et conservateur.

Le titre Iz Grotla ivota exploite un peu plus un environnement malsain mêlant à celui-ci une touche délectro récurrente discrète. Cette touche électro donne au genre un aspect farfelu et unique. Dans la façon de faire, certains pourraient y retrouver le groupe Burzum mais du fait de lutilisation de sampler, le groupe réussit à sen différencier. Cependant le black metal reste une musique non conventionnelle de base alors il est normal que certaines expérimentations aient lieu avec des sonorités comme celles de Johann Wolfgang Pozoj. Le côté avant-gardiste de la musique se retrouve aussi dans le troisième titre ---(instrumental). Un morceau totalement dédié à lambiance avec en introduction, un rappel darrangement utilisant un son qui peut nous faire penser à une goutte d'eau tombant au fin fond des abysses. Les guitares du début jusquà la fin exécuteront des riffs dissonants avec une importante distorsion. Ceux-ci prendront un certain élan avec une batterie qui se déchaîne et donnera un nouvel essor au morceau. Tout au long de lalbum, on retrouvera une énergie alliée à un son et des expérimentations qui font nous évader au plus profond de nous même. Le chant pourrait se rapprocher de celui de Sakis Tolis de Rotting Christ. Un titre en particulier attire notre attention, il sagit de Careless Are Your Soul. Très enrichissant dans les sonorités que lon pourrait retrouver en Croatie. Le chant est ici parlé et crié à tour de rôle. Il sagit dun titre tourmenté et mouvementé par ce jeu de voix pour lequel se prend Ivan Borcic. Les guitares accompagnent celui-ci avec autant de puissance dans lexécution. Le groupe aime tester de nouveaux sons en créant à chaque fois une nouvelle ambiance qui nous plonge dans des émotions contrastées alliant la sérénité, le stress et langoisse.
En 8 titres, tant démotions partagées relèvent dun long travail de composition et dinterprétation. Le dernier titre qui sappelle Prstima Prelazim Preko Tvoga Tijela... clouera, avec ses quelques 13 minutes, un opus dune qualité rare. Le morceau peut avoir un effet reposant après une telle orgie instrumentale et vocale. Tout est calme que ce soit pour les guitares ou pour le chant. Nous pouvons apprécier les moments de calme et repenser à toutes les étapes passées précédemment à travers tous ces titres.
La pochette est toute aussi travaillée que la musique. Elle aborde une certaine complexité qui tourne autour dun cercle comprenant différents éléments. Lextérieur du cercle pourrait sapparenter à la croûte terrestre. Mais il sagit de montagnes, peut-être sagit-il des montagnes de Croatie ? Le reste relève de la création et de lexistence sur terre avec des fragments dADN entourant tous ces éléments.
Le groupe nous offre un souffle de nouveauté avec un black metal avant-gardiste nhésitant pas à utilisé diverses possibilités sonores intéressantes qui nous permettent de découvrir un autre aspect de ce monde élitiste et conservateur.

If Opeth or Katatonia were mixed with Immortal, Emperor and Arcturus all at the same time you would have a good Idea of this bizarre and twisted musical force. I can see why the home for this release is Code666 there is only one other label I could see having so much interest in them and that would be Prophecy productions. Escape of Pozoj is very much on the fringe of the very metal world itself . This is a very difficult listen indeed and not for the beginner listener of extreme metal by any means. You music love complex jazz, prog and avant elements mix it with very dissident metal. Though if you know were I'm coming from then you will love this think Negura Bunget, Manes, A Forest of Stars etc. I will be listening to this in the weeks and months to come and just dig into every element and layer it has . Simply fantastic...
