British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST are strongly rumored to be performing during tonight's (Wednesday, May 25) season 10 "American Idol" finale. They are expected to hit the stage with James Durbin, the 22-year-old rocker from Santa Cruz, California, who was eliminated from "American Idol" earlier in the month but who will reportedly make a return appearance during tonight's broadcast.

Durbin performed a cover version of the JUDAS PRIEST classic "You Got Another Thing Coming" on the March 1 edition of "Idol". His rendition (see video below) marked the first time, according to AEROSMITH singer and "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler, where a JUDAS PRIEST single was performed on the "Idol" stage.

Although producers have kept a tight lid on what surprises are in store for the two-hour show, the Hollywood Reporter reported that in addition to U2's Bono and the Edge performing with castmembers from the Broadway musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark", Beyoncé and Lady Gaga will take the stage.

Judas Priest on American Idol - they did Living AM / BT Law and their new guitarist played a great solo over the breakdown in BT Law.

JP just performed two songs with James Durbin, Breakin the Law and Living After Midnight. KK has been replaced by a mysterious look-alike. You American Idol haters can diss all you want (and I don't blame you), but it's huge for a metal band like Priest to make an appearance on a show that was NOTHING but pop music just a few years ago, but has gotten much heavier in recent years. As I type this, Jack Black and Casey Abrams are singing a funny version of Queen's Fat Bottom Girls.

What. The. Fuck. Thumbs-down to JP for this decision...

It's a fucking t.v show who cares? A kid with the right attitude and a good heart is performing with his favorite band is an amazing thing. Also the more exposure to JP the better. Honestly why does it matter what show it is.

You could tell that James Durbin was having the time of his life singing on stage with Rob Halford in front of millions of people. Anyone that would begrudge him that needs their head examined. And that kid has overcome a lot in his life to get where he is. More power to him, and kudos for bringing Judas Priest to the attention of the idiot masses that normally watch AI.

Sure is not the new guy they hired? I saw pics of him and yes it looks like he had a KK makeover.

Just some food for thought. Did rockers complained when Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden showed at Top of The Pops? Would you care if a good metal band shows at SNL of a late show instead of the usual crap they present?

Iron Maiden boycotted Top of the Pops for years and years... when they did finally go back on it there was novelty value, but part of me felt they'd sold out their principles by miming on a pop show. I'd rather they hadn't done it.

Also, think about it the other way round... how would you feel if P-Diddy was suddenly playing at Donington Monsters of Rock? Or if Blabbermouth was suddenly giving us news about Lady Gaga? Or Coldplay suddenly had their official forum hosted here at ultimate metal? They have their things and we have ours... as far as I'm concerned American Idol can remain manufactured pop nonsense forever. The 'artists' on it should have to work hard like everybody else, and prove they can consistently write decent songs before being catapulted into rock stardom. Maybe this guy did have a hard life, does that really mean he's automatically entitled to get to sing with his heroes? No! I know loads of people who have had a fucking hard life and just get shit on over and over again. Are they talented people? Yes. Do they get to go on TV and sing with Judas Priest? No they don't!

Also, fuck anyone who ever helps Simon Cowell get rich. He is an awful, terrible, horrible person!

At the end of the day, whatever. Priest have been nothing but a money-chasing trend-following machine for years now. But with bands like Kiss and Aerosmith it's always been obvious, whereas Priest have always tried to pretend otherwise. They can't pretend that anymore. Half the reason I am so disillusioned with Iron Maiden is because of their blatant commercialisation in the last decade. It's got worse and worse. I'll still follow them to the ends of the Earth; I'm going to 5 of their gigs this summer. But I can't help but feel slightly dirty about it, like I'm contributing to a massive money machine that bleeds me dry at every given opportunity. I know it's my choice to engage in that, but it's hard to break a habit of a lifetime...

To me, appearing on American Idol is the ultimate symbol of being just about the money and nothing else, and it saddens me.

First at all, I respect you Joe and I understand you, so please no hard feelings.

Iron Maiden boycotted Top of the Pops for years and years.

I distinctively remember playing 'Running Free' with DiAnno and was a blast! Also Black Sabbath playing 'Never Say Die' (funny to see people dancing at it).

Also, think about it the other way round... how would you feel if P-Diddy was suddenly playing at Donington Monsters of Rock?

a) I don't like some of the so-called metal acts at those festivals, so I wouldn't care less.

b) It will a great time to throw some rotten tomatoes (or a hand grenade) to the guy

They have their things and we have ours... as far as I'm concerned

That I do relate to. I do believe metal is an elite, I don't like the stuff i respect playing on some crappy raggaeton radio or in a shitty show. So on those basis I do understand (as I said above) your feelings toward it.

Said that, I do expect from everyone in here (including us both) to respect the rest position on this matter and be free to disagree respectfully.

Peace to all.

P.S. Finally, I was able yesterday to see a rerun of the show. Just when they were playing 'Breaking The Law' and personally I found it terrible and sad :erk:.

No hard feelings of course! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I was just explaining mine :)

Maiden did do TOTP with Di'anno and insisted on playing live in a time when they made everyone mime. TOTP screwed up their sound so badly they refused to play again. In 1995 they finally went back on the show and mimed Man On The Edge on top of a pyramid thing with only Blaze doing live vocals... it was pretty rubbish.

I don't care for any idol stuff, but this year they seem to have some pretty good singers coming up in the US;
I'm not saying their versions of the songs are that great (sound a bit too poppy), but both guys have amazing voices !

Rob was a lot more lively in this AI clip then when I saw him in concert a couple of years ago & he just kinda stood in place hunched over the whole show.

quote:

'Yeah, we said it. Lady Gaga went to see Iron Maiden and, whilst talking about the show, summed up how communal metal can be. Elitist dickheads, please bring a pencil and take notes.'

...

'I guess what I’m trying to say is the devotion of the fans moving in unison, pumping their fists, watching the show, when I see that, I see the paradigm for my future and the relationship I want to have with my fans. Iron Maiden’s never had a hit song, and they tour stadiums around the world, and their fans live, breathe and die for Maiden, and that is my dream. That is my dream.”

“And not only that, but when we got into the crowd, there was no pretension. I’m a pop singer — I didn’t know what it would be like in a crowd of a Maiden fans; everybody was hugging me, high-fiving, fistpumps in the air… ‘Oh, it’s so cool you’re at Maiden.’ Jumping and dancing…I mean, it was like absolute no judgment, no prejudice, freedom and love for music. It doesn’t matter who you are; you don’t need to know anything about music to love it. And it was just so… It was just awesome… Maiden changed my life.

So there you go. Lady Gaga gets it.'
