I'm in two minds about this - while it sounds great that Dave Ellefson is back in Megadeth in time for the Rust In Peace 20th Anniversary Tour, I'm also somewhat dubious as to the reasons behind it. Given the recent history between the two Daves, the lawsuits etc, why on earth would Mustaine ever want Ellefson back? The only reason that makes any sense to me is, Mustaine and James Lomenzo MUST have fallen out big time (with Mustaine's track record, not a big suprise), and personally I think Lomenzo quit rather than was dumped by Mustaine. What with the big tours Megadeth are signed up for, they need a bass player who knows the material, and fast. DM knows that DE would rejoin Megadeth at the drop of a hat, and would be so grateful he would kowtow to anything DM asks, so the fans get some good news, and DE is back being DM's bitch again. The only question now is, how long will it last?

Wow:OMG:
Lomenzo is a great bassist but damn, Ellefson is just GOD. Good to hear:)

EDIT: Is this some kind of reunion year for Mustaine or what? I mean tour with Metallica and Ellefson back in the band??

h has been talking alot, especially when talking about his book, that he is trying to patch things up with many of the many many...many...many etc people hes had feuds with. kerry king was the other one hes patched things up with

It seems that my initial reaction was correct, Lomenzo quit the band very suddenly, leaving Megadeth in urgent need of a bass player - this quote just went up on Blabbermouth:

Bassist David Ellefson spoke exclusively with U.K.'s Classic Rock magazine about his return to MEGADETH after an eight-year absence.

"It literally happened over the weekend," he said. "And I can hardly believe it myself. There was clearly gonna be a change in the lineup, because James Lomenzo was leaving. Dave [Mustaine, MEGADETH mainman] and I talked on the phone, and all the feuds, all the arguments we've been having over the years just melted away. It just goes to show what direct contact can achieve!"

Regarding how the whole thing came about, Ellefson said, "Obviously, I have no clue what happened within the band. But I got a text from Shawn [Drover, drums] and it just said, 'If ever there was a time for you and Dave to talk, now is it.' It's one of those messages you act on immediately. Typically of MEGADETH, things then happened big and fast.

"In all honesty, talking to Dave again was wonderful. It was the right thing at the right time, done in the right spirit."

Weeeeeeelllllll, he would say that, wouldn't he? We'll just wait and see if he is still in the band when the next album gets written. That said, if as suggested, the 20th Anniversary RIP tour comes to England with Testament and Exodus, I'll definitely be there.

While I like Lomenzo I couldn't really care less about him leaving the band. Simply because he's been replaced by the Megadeth bassist.

I don't think Mustaine would have Ellefson back in the band unless he really thought it could work. Personally I've never had a problem with Mustaine, and while I think there are a lot of people who genuinely dislike him, for whatever reason. I can't help but get the impression a lot of people in the metal community are just jumping on the bandwagon and dubbing him a 'douche' simply because it's the done thing. I think the band will work with Ellefson back in the line up, Megadeth are on a high right now. They've put out their strongest album in years, and not only that, now they have their strongest line up in years. I really fucking hope the Rust In Peace tour comes to the UK. Long live Megadeth.

(Yeah, I know, I'm a total fanboy.)
