Just scored my personal deal of a lifetime

I've been toying with the idea of getting a stereo master tape machine, and a friend just pointed me towards a Telefunken M15A in good working condition.

It's the top model on this page (not this exact unit): http://www.hilpert-audio.de/audio/index_e.php?site=geraete&inhalt=geraete/e_geraete_aeg_m15.htm

The price? 150€ + shipping, the seller will get back to me tomorrow about the shipping costs. If they're huge, I'll just drive there to pick it up.

I'm fucking stoked! Now I just need to hunt down what kind of tape fits in there.

You should have checked that beforehand tho. Anyway, good luck ;)

I actually called the previous owner who operates a studio. Really nice guy, gave me lots of info on the particular unit. The guy I bought it from hasn't used it once, so it has been stored away since it was removed from operation.

Wow man, sounds awesome! Nice catch (if everything's working and you get fitting tapes in the end :D )

Completely off topic, but it annoys the hell out of me: The pic in your signature isn't working anymore (http://tainted-studio.com/img/tainted_studio_logo_sneap.png).
I just see a big goddamn blue questionmark instead of your logo.

Yeah, apparently it takes pretty much all kinds of the regular 1/4" tapes with a proper adapter, and Thomann has some AEG tape that fits right in. Just gotta find out what tape it's calibrated for.

That's really weird about the logo. Anyone else have the same problem? The file is still on the server untouched and it works fine here :O

What the hell do you do with that? Isn't this the year 2011?

I'm sure you can figure it out if you give it a bit of thought. And no, it's got nothing to do with fishing.

Edit: The same on my iPhone, no idea what's wrong with my internet

Thanks for the info man, I'll look into it tomorrow and try to figure out if it's the same elsewhere! :)

Now when I think of it, this move could actually bring more clients to you. I can imagine bunch of 'tape is warm, digital sucks' black metal bands coming your way :)

Haha, you guys make it sound like I'll be splicing Ulrich's drum tracks to grid by hand on a two-incher  It's just a stereo master unit, not much tape madness there :)

Since it's 1/4", the tape is pretty cheap too. RMG PER 528 is about 20€ per roll, and if I want to go fancy, 468 is about 60€.

Looks like 1/4-inch tape in the picture. Once you get the machine you might want to have someone calibrate it and make sure it's all in proper working order. The heads might need cleaning but you can probably just do that yourself with some alcohol and cotton swabs.

Yup, it's 1/4". I just don't know what type of tape it's calibrated for, so I gotta find out or find someone who can properly calibrate it. I don't like the idea of investing in the necessary equipment myself :) Cleaning the heads every now and then is a pretty much given.
