K.K. Downing has released a new version of his former band’s “Never Satisfied”. The Judas Priest legend teamed with former Priest vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens on the Rocka Rolla standout.

The idea for the cover came about with the 2024’s 50th anniversary reissue of Rocka Rolla.

“I thought, ‘I’m just going to plug the guitar in and have a go at jamming along to a couple of these songs,'” he tells Ultimate Classic Rock. “I just had fun doing it and I thought I would put the track down and ask Ripper if he’d do the courtesy of throwing a vocal on there. It came about really quickly and it was fun.”

In a recent interview with Sakis Fragos for Rock Hard Greece, K.K. Downing talks about the early days of Judas Priest, and the band’s debut album, Rocka Rolla, released in 1974. An excerpt from the chat follows…

When Sakis points out that Rocka Rolla reportedly sold only a few thousand copies upon its release, and wondered if Downing worried about the future of the band at that point, K.K. responds, “We didn’t have any money… I bought my first old, cheap £50 car, that was very bad, when I was 27 years old. Up until I was 27, I used to either catch the bus, walk, or ride my bicycle. When I was 27, let me think… I was probably recording Stained Class, so I was still riding my bicycle. That’s the way it is. But even when I was 27, I still didn’t have any money, even though I had an old car, I couldn’t really afford to run it.”

Asked again if he worried about the future of Judas Priest at that point, K.K. adds, “Not really, because I had so much belief in the band. You know, I did believe in the band because, you know, I thought by that time, things had moved on quite a bit. I seemed to think that around about then, Stained Class, I started to wear some leather and studs and things, and Rob quickly followed suit. Everything was always evolving within the band. We were always getting better and better, we were always improving. Each record was kind of doing better than the one before. And we were with the great recording company, Sony, who were always very good and supported the band. And obviously, with Rob Halford in the band… the first time I ever heard Rob sing, I thought that he was the best singer in the world.

And that was always in my mind, you know, to be able to have a band with myself, with everybody, and all the ingredients of the band, and also have a singer like Rob. I always kind of thought that, ‘this band can’t fail, can it?’ It can’t really fail because, you know, I just had the belief in the band. And it’s good to have that, because it helps you, you know, it doesn’t matter what happens, it doesn’t matter if you have no money, it doesn’t matter if you can’t pay the bills. To have that belief is something to really hang on to.”
