...or slower, more doom-y death metal in general. I'm really enjoying "Shadows & Dust", "Serenity in Fire" and "In the Arms of Devastation". I intend to look into the earlier releases as well.

They're melodic death/doom metal with folk influences sprinkled throughout.

Try Incantation.
And those two thoughts don't really follow on each other...

Agreed with this guy's recommendation. Slow doomy death metal, some of the best I've heard.

As for any recommendations, the only thing I could come up with that even comes close to Kataklysm is Krisium and Arghoslent. Kataklysm are in a league of their own in the genre.
 
No, it's the newly discovered element Krisium, which we now know to be the heaviest naturally occurring element. Apparently you can smoke it.
 
The older stuff is faster, I believe, more in line with their self-label "Northern Hyperblast."
The new album has those lumbering heavy grooves.
