Katatonia were once a Death Metal band

You: Death metal HAS to be nihilistic.
You: Katatonia are death metal.
You: I contradict myself too much. And I'm wrong about Katatonia because they were never death metal, even though their music may have occasionally had death metal elements.

There is no such thing as dark metal. A blackish offshoot of doom? Not likely. Early Katatonia was definitely hugely influenced by Paradise Lost, and both bands started out as doom death, similar to My Dying Bride and Anathema (who actually started out a LOT closer to death metal than doom death on their demos).

Yeah, I heard that they used to play death metal, though I have none of their death metal albums. There are actually quite a few bands other bands that started out playing death metal and then left the genre, like Sentenced, Entombed, Gorefest, Therion, etc.. But in Katatonia's case the change in sound was especially drastic.

Some people call Katatonia's old stuff doom, some even call it black, I've heard a hundred different labels put on it. Personally, I don't care, I like the music.

Bwahahaha, thanks for the link, that was hilarious. Proto doom? Emotional rock? Those guys have way too much free time and they take way too many liberties with musical definition. If you really need that much seperation of subgenres, then you should be beaten and left for dead, seriously.

Forest of Shadows sounds like Skepticism mixed with My Dying Bride, they have absolutely no black metal influences so you mentioning them is useless to your point.

are you crazy dude? have you even heard forest of shadows' first stuff? its almost exactly like dance of december souls, only with more acoustics, those are all real genres as well, dark metal is a very real thing, i used to have the site for it. look at the band list, i suppose your going to tell me skepticism is death/doom? and they call it proto doom for a reason being that they were the bands that influenced modern day doom stuff, tell me black sabbath doesnt have a doom-like sound

so what does listening to your neo-funkadelic rapcore have to do with me being a moron? your probably listening to progression trip-hop with influences of dance and 70's disco :loco:

well either way, genre nazis or not, i dont agree with this old katatonia = crappy death metal...since the vocals werent death they had a more blackness to them, brave murder day was more a progression in musical style than dance of december souls.

wait...who the fuck cares what katatonia were? if its good listen to it, old new, middle aged its all good

Yes, let us just admit that Katatonia were doom and leave this sub-genre-ization bullshit behind us. I like to think of us as beyond that petty childish crap. I used to be one of the "oh this is funeral doom, oh this is symphonic black metal, oh this is blackened thrashcore / symphonic progressive deathgrind" motherfuckers, but that's in the past and quite frankly, music is too important to be categorized in such stringent manners.

i totally agree...though i think the only reason to use the ultra subgenre mayhem is only against little nu-metal/pop/punk/rap twits, only b/c it makes them scared and confused

i do understand the reason for all these stupid sub-subgenres, i guess to give you an idea of the what the music sounds like, like "funeral doom" being much slower than the "death/doom" and "drone doom" just being for the most part, slow, repetitive, bass heavy noise
