I went over around 9:30 with Blake (singer/Triac) after confirming with Sam that the Dots were running a little late. We motored around looking for the venue (Supreme Imperial) and pulled up just as the Dots did. There was a joyful reunion, let me tell you.
The space was really quite cool physically, although I've heard bad things about the people that run it (which turned out to be largely true...more on that later...). It's a converted mechanics garage, huge inside, and they still had halloween decorations up so there were creepy spiderwebs and candelabras strewn about.
We got some beers from the illegal bar and hung out for a bit; Sam showed me some great pictures of clouds and goats and grashoppers he'd taken in Texas, Greg lost all the merch money (Toby took it when he wasn't looking), Mia played gameboy. I met this pretty rad girl who works at the independant movie theater next to the crepe shop I work at and we named cities in the US in alphabetical order, only getting stumped on X and Z (and cheating a bit on Q...Quantico isn't a city per se but you could live there, which was the whole point of the exercize).
Band 1 played, I have no idea what they were called, and they were terrrrrible. Noisy mushy punk art rock, and the instruments were completely impossible to seperate from each other. We suffered through them, then Dagger Hearts (I think) played an awful synth-pop set (with definite NIN undertones). They were somehow worse than Band 1, with incredibly loud and bad vocals, an anemic drum machine, and boring melody lines.
There was some panic as Kayo Dot was setting up because the owners of the space suddenly decided that only non-effected vocals could be run through the PA, so no violin, no keyboard, no horns, no delay, no samples, etc etc. Buncha pansies, if you ask me. DJ somehow hooked it up though, and the KD went on with nearly a full set-up (no keyboards, I think). The guitars had to turn down a bit to accomodate, but this was for the best since the room was REALLY boomy and mostly empty (I counted about 40 people, not bad considering the show was not promoted at ALL). They played their 4 song set, and I sat in the back and enjoyed the floating sensation and familiar sounds. I thought it sounded damn good, all things considered, but only Greg agreed with me. DJ actually looked at me like I had a booger hanging out my nose when I told him it sounded good, but I also didn't have the benefit of hearing them play a bajillion times over the last month. More hugs, great hugs, the best hugs, then I had to take off and try to get some sleep so I could be here typing to you guys today. Blake dragged me out to another bar though, and I watched him drink guiness for a while and we talked Triac (UK tour! I am doing awesome! and the like...). Finally got in at 2:45 and now I feel like I want to die.
Fin!
