In a new interview with Brazil’s Cucamonga, Slayer guitarist Kerry King discussed his relationship with frontman Tom Araya, saying they “don’t talk on the phone. We rarely text each other, and that’s just because when you’re together for 40 years… he became a very different person. He’s not the guy I started the band with. Not personally, just him; he’s a different person. I basically stayed very similar to who I’ve been in my twenties. I like Tom, we’re cool.”
King also discussed his chemistry with Araya at the band’s reunion shows at Chicago’s Riot Fest and Sacramento’s Aftershock Festival:
“It wasn’t weird. We did those two shows (and) he was super happy. We got together after the second one, had a shot after the show. He’ll drink tequila and I love tequila, so that’s what we had. I think the first idea to play this year was for the Louder Than Life festival show we missed last year ’cause of the hurricane. So we rebooked that and I said, ‘If we never play another show, I wanna make that right with the promoter,’ because it wasn’t our fault. But he wanted us to play, so we’re playing there this year. And this year we get to play that Black Sabbath show (Back To The Beginning). I can’t fucking wait.”
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Brasil columnist Igor Miranda, which can be seen below, King confirmed that Slayer will cover a Black Sabbath song at Back To The Beginning – Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath’s final concert on July 5 in Birmingham, England.
“I’ve already thought about being at that show very early because a lot of my friends are going to be playing Sabbath songs; and I want to see a lot of it,” begins Kerry. “I’m sure the stage is going to be a nightmare getting on to, so I’m hoping there’s live feeds backstage so we can just watch it and hear it. I want to see Metallica, I want to see Pantera, I want to see Lzzy Hale, just to name a few.”
“It’s such an honor to even be thought of to play that, and I’m glad we were actually in the ‘working mode’ so we can get that offer,” continues King. “It’s gonna be awesome. And I drug my feet and picked our song really late, so when there weren’t as many obvious choices, but the one I picked is gonna work out really cool. I worked it out with my (solo) band, so me and Paul (Bostaph, drummer for Kerry King and Slayer) could rehearse it. So we’ve already got it. We’ve just got to get Tom (Araya, Slayer vocalist / bassist) and Gary (Holt, Slayer guitarist) on board whenever — probably in June we’ll rehearse for that. It’s gonna be killer. What we’re doing is cool.”
Slayer put their own touch on Sabbath’s “Hand Of Doom” for the Nativity In Black II: A Tribute To Black Sabbath album, which came out in 2000.
The original Black Sabbath – Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward – will perform together for the first time in 20 years when they take to the stage to headline the sold-out Back To The Beginning event on July 5 at Villa Park in Birmingham, England.
The all-star event will celebrate the true creators of heavy metal and will see Ozzy – who is battling Parkinson’s Disease – play his own short set before joining with Black Sabbath for his final bow. All profits will go to the following charities: Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice, a Children’s Hospice supported by Aston Villa.
Back To The Beginning will feature sets from Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Gojira, Halestorm, Alice In Chains, Lamb Of God, Anthrax and Mastodon.
The all-day event will also feature a supergroup of musicians. Artists include Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins), David Draiman (Disturbed), Duff McKagan & Slash (Guns ‘n Roses), Frank Bello (Anthrax), Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Jake E Lee, Jonathan Davis (Korn), K.K. Downing, Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Mike Bordin (Faith No More), Rudy Sarzo, Sammy Hagar, Scott Ian (Anthrax), Sleep Token II (Sleep Token), Papa V Perpetua (Ghost), Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine), Wolfgang Van Halen, Zakk Wylde, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), David Ellefson (Megadeth), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe), and Andrew Watt.
