I've really taken a liking to Derek Sherinian recently (formerly Dream Theater, played on A Change of Seasons and Falling Into Infinity). He's not as technically proficient as others like Jordan Rudess or Rick Wakeman, but I love his style. He's very much an ensemble player, writes most of his parts to go along with the whole band, and doesn't show off as much as Rudess does. But when he does take the spotlight, it can be almost like having another guitarist. He uses lots of distortion without being excessive or annoying, and I've heard it said that he uses as much finger technique on the pitch bender as on the keys. His solo album Black Utopia is excellent, plus it has Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar. DT really would have been better off if they'd stuck with him, IMO.

I agree... A Change of Seasons is my fav album of their's infact. Rudess is cool though. Just... not AS cool :p.

A couple I really dig not mentioned yet.

Oliver Palotai (Kamelot)
Jonah W (Pyramaze, Echoterra) - in addition to his awesome metal work, I love his non-metal Dance of the Mourning Child album (I even gave that to my 70 year old mother for Christmas!)
