So, I found Dogman at half price books the other day and this album is fucking phenomenal. Truly one of the most underrated rock bands in recent history.

I don't know how their live shows are these days but I saw them with Dream Theater a few years ago and the singer was drunk and out of tune. Missed a few of his ques too.

Well, I saw them with Dream Theater a few years back as well & they were phenomenal. I really enjoyed their set. They seemed to maybe even play a better set than Dream Theater, as that might have been a somewhat weak set for DT. Ty Tabor is an awesome guitarist. I think they fit a little more under the Progressive Hard Rock/Metal genre. I need to get some of their stuff eventually & they're all excellent musicians.

No, I think a lot of people listen to them actually. They're pretty well known in Prog circles. Everyone here is just 2 kvlt & tr00 to give a shit I guess.

I need an album by them, I don't know why it's took so long to get one...

Awesome thread! I picked up on these guys when Out of the Silent Planet came out and loved it. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska and Faith, Hope, Love are great as well. I haven't bought any of their recent stuff. I think I was afraid it couldn't be as good as the early material.

Oh fuck yes.

I've seen them a few times (although not recently), and every time was brilliant. So talented for just three dudes. If I had a complaint it would be that they are definitely losing steam creatively-speaking. They haven't had a great album since "Ear Candy", IMO.

I've never heard this band. What are they like?

Hard Rock with a mild Prog bend to them. Three guys. Lead singer Doug Pinnick plays bass guitar as well. Has a very passionate, soulful Rock-voice more in a mid-range. The guitarist occasionally sings lead as well on a handfull of songs, some better than others. His voice is a bit lighter and higher, definitely more suited for harmony vocals rather than lead. And the harmonies are a-plenty, as the drummer Jerry Gaskill sings backing vox as well. So just from a singing and playing staindpoint, they are mightilly talented. And they've written some great rock songs as well!

Great albums by them:

Dogman (1994)
Faith, Hope, Love (1990)
Ear Candy (1996)
King's X (1992)

Albums that are good:
Gretchen Goes To Nebraska (1989)
Please Come Home... MR. Bulbous (2000)
Tape Head (1998)

Everything else is not so great, but that's definitely a lot of quality material.

Traded in some crappy DVDs at the local record exchange and got Dogman, King's X, and Mr. Bulbous. I'm ashamed at not having kept up with their stuff, especially since I purchased Out of the Silent Planet when it was originally released.

Thanks. I'll look into them.

The beauty of this group is that they can sound very Beatle-esque, and then bluesy, metallic, all on one album, and in some instances, in a single song. I started with Gretchen, and Faith Hope Love at the same time. I have all their albums, and even the ones that to me seemed a little weaker than others still are good albums. Bulbous and Manic Moonlight are on the lighter, but soulful side... still like them. Pinnick sang backup on the Dream Theater song Lines in the Sand-and live as well, when they toured with DT. Very nice guys, too. Pinnick is very social after a show.
