Great show tonight, sorry to see Sara having some technical amp problems... what the hell was up? Thought she handled it well... She looked like a panther ready to strike waiting that that amp to work! :headbang:

It was my first Paladinos show... I caught them last week in OC, and I think I preferred this venue more... However, so far nothing beats the HOB show last NAMM. I think the band really excels when they have the space and production value to support them.

I'm a bassist, but I'm always really impressed with Jojo's playing. You rock!(and thanks for the pick!) Great technique, tight, clean style.... You constantly blow me way... and I still think you guys pull of the Somewhere in Time material better than Maiden do live... I know blasphemy! but there's something about that paticular album that sounds really melodic to me with female vocals and especially the backing vocals... the harmonizing on Wasted Years is truly awesome. Great work!

Being a bassist, I can't help but be critical, and Wanda's certainly got her hands full for sure filling Steve's shoes, but I have to say I'm more often than not extremely impressed! Nothing sexier than a girl belting out some Steve Harris riffs! Still, it's hard for me to sometimes accept a slightly different playing style on the bass. I wrote about this before but didn't get a comment back. I may be nit picking, but there is a wealth of material out there to use as resources to see how Steve plays songs. I MUCH prefer playing the classic 7, 3, 5 pattern on the board over using the 2nd fret and open strings. First, it radically affects that signature "CLANK" of the strings. The register and position you play a riff IS important. Second, to me it seems a path of least resistance. Don't get me wrong, I think Wanda does an amazing job. But on the flip side, I do also have a bone to pick on the opening riff of Killers... the second half of that should be played with an open A as a droning note, NOT open E. :erk: On a bright note, I've never heard her play Phantom better than this evening! That's a tuff one to nail and she hit it spot on! :worship: Great job! I'd love to compare notes with you sometime!

Also, I like your bass, but I have to say, I think you "suffer" from a similar situation that I do... I'm 5'11" (not tiny, but not huge to say the least) but more importantly I have smaller hands, so way back in high school... (um... late 80s here!) I actually made a 3/4 sized Steve Harris tribute bass.

I actually used a friend's Charvel strat body as a template. So it's the size of a standard guitar. And even though the neck is standard 34" scale, it has a much smaller profile and nut width, so it's very comfortable for smaller fingers!

I actually butchered the paint job in the 80s using automotive spray paint from a rattle can, but in the last year I've been moonlighting as a luthier for a master builder and one of my first projects was to complete my Harris bass properly... So besides finally being properly set up, it now has an amazing GMW TransBlue Sprakle finish that is absolutely ALIVE!

It's hard to photograph the sparkle because its vibrancy has more to do with how it changes with different angles, but I think you get the idea from this pic...

Anyway, great job gals! I'll be seeing y'all soon!

Thanks for the comments and constructive criticism :) -and sorry there was no comment on your previous thread- we probably didn't see it or think to open it if it was under an off-topic title. The best way to ensure a response would be to e-mail us directly.
I'm aware of the alternate fingerings and I've actually been in the process of relearning some of the tunes using them just to add authenticity. Perhaps, since I started on upright bass and not bass guitar, my brain works a little differently when learning tunes so I'll naturally go to fingerings that may seem odd to those of you who mainly play bass guitar. It's hard to explain why you naturally do what you do. The other fingerings are definitely doable and even make more sense at times - it's just a matter of getting used to doing them. Of course that's a little like trying to get used to not smoking once you've gotten into the habit ..but it's not impossible.
There are also a number of things that contribute to Steve's sound besides the fingerings- did you know he changes his strings before every show? Most bass players use the same strings for months if not years. I could go on forever about different bass topics but then this would be a painfully long thread. So... feel free to send me an e-mail anytime if you'd like to chat about bass - it's hard to catch things on the BB unless you have time to check each and every thread so e-mail is the best way to go. :)
Anyway, thanks again for your comments. We value the feedback and welcome the constructive criticism because it all helps. :Spin:

Thanks for the response Wanda! Sure, I've tried the Rotosound flatwounds before and BOY do they go dead quick! Not my personal fav... I usually use GHS boomers in a light to medium light gauge. Great sound, good clank and stay bright forever!

In all honesty, I think it's amazing what you do. You clearly have spent a lot of time getting those songs down... I have my personal favorite tunes to play... Murders in the Rue Morgue, Phantom, To Tame a Land, Infinite Dreams, Invaders, Aces and of course Rime of the Ancient Mariner... But in all honesty, I've probably sluffed off on certain ones, maybe glancing over a little imbellishment here or there. So you in fact inspire me to be more dilligent... even though I'm not curently playing in a Maiden cover band! :erk:

I think I read that you are using rotosounds, if so are you using the flatwounds? I put a set of standard roundwound rotos on a bass I was setting up for a client and they were very hard on the fingertips... It's hard to explain but something in the metal choice used was very sort of tactile in almost a sticking fashion that just TORE up my fingers! I'll stick with the GHS. Very bright, "clank" amazingly well. My main system back in the 80s was a Trace Elliot preamp and a Gallien Kreuger head. That was an amazing combo. I have virtually the same rig, but now have a Hartke amp for the power but still through the Trace preamp... I talked with Michael Kinney at NAMM and he confirmed that Steve is still using a "version" of his original HiWatt amp from back in the 70s, though it's been heavily modified.

I'm anxious to see your modified positioning on the tunes, I do think it is a element to consider. Any thoughts on the Killers riff? Instead of going to the 12th fret on the A and have the open E, try the 7th fret on D and open A... give it a listen. :headbang:

Keep up the great work! Any chance you guys will do Infinite Dreams? Love that track and the middle section just SLAMS, very fun on bass too!

Cheers and Up the Irons!

Chris

Shut up Chris! Steph Rocks!! :headbang:

Many many years ago, while taking guitar and cello in high school, my guitar teacher was also the orchestra teacher (so he was my cello teacher as well). The first week in class, a guy brought in a Rush songbook that had their songs written out for both guitar and bass. A couple of guys were playing (trying) some Rush songs and the teacher got a little pissed that these guys were "beating up" their guitars so bad on this crap! They tried to explain that Rush was the greatest band ever, and so on... and how Geddy Lee is the greatest bass player ever! So the teacher grabs the book, thumbs through it and finds a song. He looks it over and takes the book to his stand, grabs his upright bass, and proceeds to play note for note the bass line for "Trees" on his upright bass. :OMG: Now THATS what I call being able to read music! It was even more fun when I started to play it from the beginning and he started playing right along - coming in at the right spot and all. Those guys about shit themselves! :tickled: He then gave them their book back and said (paraphrase) "yea, he's good... a lot better than the Beatles and this new wave crap! But if he wanted to be a guitar player he shoulda stuck to guitar." It was just funny as hell to see this ultra-nerdy 50+ year old die-hard classical guy show us punks how it's really done!

Anyway, it was he that taught me to appreciate the classically trained musician... for they can usually play anything if they want to. So, what's the point of this? Wanda Rocks, of course!! :worship: :headbang: That, and Maiden kicks the crap out of Rush any day! :headbang:

Wanda, I think that your diplomatic response is very admirable. While constructive criticism is always good, I think that it is best if only sent privately and not on a public forum.

Well I'm not surprised that a classical player can play music from a music sheet, but I would say it's all hard, Rush or Maiden or whatever, as long as it's played well, but Iron Maiden is at the top of the list challenge though.

Personally I don't care how someone plays as long as it's musical, has meter and follows through (and through again), like a good Kung Fu kick! It’s the energy that I like.

Hey Paull (Bichmaker) don't get all sassy on me.... (Um, we know each other from a guitar building forum, and actualy saw the Maidens at the HOB show together...) I don't think there's anything wrong with creating a discussion on how Maiden is played in a forum for a Maiden tribute band! Now if I was griping on the IMBB that I didn't like how STEVE played something, well that'd just be asking for it. No extent of small criticism or suggestions can always come off as intended. I prefaced and postfaced (;-)) that I think Wanda rocks!

I think comparing Rush and Maiden are very different things... I learned to play bass by playing Maiden tunes when I was like 12 years old... I stuck with that for a while before venturing in to much heavier material in my original bands back in the late 80s and early 90s... However, it was a few years into my playing that I started to really listen to Rush from a musician standpoint and it floored me. Geddy is a very different player from Steve. And I personally like how both of the brains work! Now, throw in Robertino from Ohm into that mix? Whoa, now that's radically different! Who is better? I say none.

However, with all that ranting aside, guess where I will be this August... the Phoenix and LA shows of Ozzfest baby!

Wanda, if anything I said came off as derogatory or venomous, apologies, I have nothing but respect for your playing. :worship:

Paull, bite me!

Oh Chris, you know we love ya! :worship: Didn't mean to rip on ya (you know that) and I know you weren't ripping on Wanda (or anybody else). For some reason, I went off on a classical vs rock approach to playing music and it ended up in left field. I humbly sit with my ass kicked and can only say I'm suffering from withdrawls... yea, that's the ticket!

I'll meet you all in Phoenix and I've got the first round! :headbang:

I was at the Paladino's and I was very impressed by the girls' abilities. This was my first time seeing them and I was worried at first because I saw Wanda and the bass that was practically as big as her. But she kicked its ass! :worship: She was all over the neck with ease! Now I might have to find a girl as beautiful and talented as her to marry - a tough task. But I was in love that night. Hope to see you again Ferrous maidens!

I looked at www.theironmaidens.com and I didn't see a tour planned, will your band be touring the USA this Summer, or any other countries either? It that's the case then it would kinda' depressing; I would like to see the band get a bunch of cities under the belt.

Another great show and awesome setlist, thank you Maidens!
And hope the Flute Guy had a Happy Birthday... he chose a great way to spend it - Maidens show!

There seemed to be a really good vibe at the club that night, but heard Sara was sick so hope she (and her amp) are doing better now!

Excellent setlist, I was soooo stoked that Remember Tomorrow and POTO were both played, along with the great selections off 7th Son! Stranger in a Strange Land was good to hear-- heavy and powerful live! Fear of the Dark had some great audience participation. Yep, a good vibe with people digging Maiden's music.

This was my 24th show and one of the best (they all seem to be!). My buddy and I (another veteran) brought a newbie who was understandably blown away by the music and the stage show. It was kinda funny to watch the newbie reaction... so excited, dancing around like a madman & getting crazy. (He was the nut that was swinging the puka shell necklace over his head during NOTB:loco: ) We all had a blast! Thank you Ladies!
Until next time, UP THE IRONS!:headbang:

It was definately a cool show... Still I think my fav has to have been at the HOB. That show just RIPPED! Great sound system there... Plenty of stage room to really get into the theatrics and awesome lighting... Not like Diablo's where I think there was at most a Red light and a Green light occasionally changing! ;-)

You fine ladies definately need more "leg room" to strut your stuff!

Up the Irons!

Hey Crank Yanker!
It was great to see you at the show! Been a little while since we've seen ya. We had such a wonderful time and it was great seeing your friend have such a blast as we busted his MaidenShead!
The vibe was very cool that night and the audience was, as always, great.

Thanks Aja, it was nice to chat with you at Paladino's! Looking forward to next time... maybe Diego if I can swing it. Cheers! :)

Take note NoEffen- Canes is one of the better/bigger stages = more leg room.
All the better to watch the Maidens kick out the jams!

Empyre is on the bill too!:hotjump:Yes!!
Man I really gotta make it down to this one!:headbang:
