Actually, in French if you do a bibliography or if you write a title of anything, and you don't do Italic, it's a mistake. But for handwritting it must be done with underline instead of italics.

you cant write in Italics, because Italics, if anything, simulate handwriting.

Also...The rule is in English as well, but Leandro does often go into great detail quoting wikipedia .
