Light This City - Facing The Thousand
Prosthetic Records - 6561910017-2 - September 19th, 2006
By Brandon Strader
Light This City is an impressive band of youngsters who idolize such melodic death groups as At The Gates and Carcass amongst such thrash groups as Megadeth and Testament. Their singer is also pretty cute. No worries, it's a female. A female growler. You know those things are always cool. If the growlers from bands like Arch Enemy and Kittie turn you on, then you should be pretty pleased with Light This City. Nobody listens to bands just because they've got a hot front(wo)man. Luckily, Light This City pour out their own lethal brand of thrashy melodic death that honors the originators, yet breathes a breath of fresh air into the genres even today. And did I mention their singer is hot?
The first quarter of the title track is some cheesy fake orchestra that keeps piling on the different string ensembles and marching snare drum until it actually starts to sound pretty cool. Guitar leads and harsh powerchords explode into the music accompanied by a rolling double bass, and the awesomeness continues for the rest of the song, nay, the rest of the album. The attractive female vocalist busts out her first extended growl of the album, which is very dense and strong (for a chick I mean) and has a tiny bit of reverb on it, making it sound truly massive. The songwriting is fantastic, and does remind me of At The Gates now that you mention it. It's amazing that these youths, who are an average of 20 years old now, are so much better than even some of the big name folks, say The Haunted and In Flames... Older In Flames I mean, before the sell-out era of Reroute To Remain and beyond.
Pounding riffs, memorable hooks and leads, and a fantastic hot-chick growling performance make Facing The Thousand really one of those albums you've got to check out, especially if you're a fan of any of the aforementioned bands in this review. Light This City could really go far, as they've got the skill and wicked fervor of the more elderly metal bands joined with their promising youth and appreciation for metal and great songwriting. Check out Facing The Thousand when it gets released... today!
