As the Yacht Metal album sails ever closer to shore, two of the most dynamic performers on the classic metal scene, former Judas Priest frontman Tim “Ripper” Owens and UFO guitarist Vinnie Moore, unite to offer up a further taste of the good ship’s final destination.
“Kiss You All Over” was a monster hit for Kentucky band Exile in 1978, and was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman… that is, the same songwriting team that dominated worldwide charts throughout the first half of the 1970s.
Their Chinnichap brand was as beloved as the bands they produced, and the records they made… The Sweet (“Blockbuster,” “Wig Wam Bam,” “Ballroom Blitz”), Suzi Quatro (“Can The Can,” “Devilgate Drive,” “Daytona Demon”), Smokie (“Living Next Door to Alice,” “Don’t Play Your Rock’n’Roll To Me”), Mud (“Tiger Feet,” “Rocket,” “The Cat Crept In”)… the list is all but endless.
In addition, Chapman alone had just launched his own production career, with Nick Gilder (“Hot Child In The City”), The Knack (“My Sharona,” and the Get The Knack album) and Blondie (the behemoth that was Parallel Lines).
Exile were one more halt in a frenetic year for Chapman, and though the band may not be as fondly remembered as those others, “Kiss You All Over” was unstoppable. And yes. When Yacht Rockers get together, it’s never far from their affections. A sentiment with which Vinnie and Ripper both concur.
Ripper says, “Kinda crazy me doing ‘Kiss You All Over’ by Exile, but wow was it fun! I actually like the so-called yacht rock music; it has so many amazing songs and songwriters! So I tried to keep it true, yet rocking it up a bit Ripper Style! Thanks to Cleopatra for reaching out to me to do it!”
Vinnie Moore adds, “It’s awesome to be on this track with Tim. My mission was to heavy it up as much as I could so I went with big guitar tones.”
Yacht Metal itself is fast shaping up as one of the most audacious compilations of the year, bringing together a boat load of metal icons to pay tribute to one of the most enthusiastically embraced genres in the modern classic rock spectrum.
Megadeth’s Chris Poland, Rainbow alumni Joe Lynn Turner, Graham Bonnet and Bob Daisley; Marcus Nand, Bumblefoot, Cherie Currie (Runaways), Mick Box (Uriah Heep), BulletBoys and Tantric are among the metal masters to have thrown themselves into the album, going overboard for such Yacht Rock staples as “Moonlight Feels Right” (Starbuck), Takin’ It To The Streets” (Doobie Brothers), “Magnet And Steel” (Walter Egan with Stevie Nicks) and, of course, the song that might well have launched the Yacht Rock phenomenon in the first place, Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).”
Well, it’s unlikely there will be any escaping Yacht Metal once it berths. And what better introduction to the party could there be than letting Vinnie and Ripper kiss you all over?
