Loscil – Submers
Kranky – Kkrank058 – 4th November 2002
By Russell Garwood

Scott Morgan, otherwise known as Loscil, hails from Vancouver and plays tranquil minimal electronica/techno. Drones, laid back beats, dub influences and ethereal ambient sections are immured within loosely structured, meandering compositions. Each song on Submers, Loscil’s second release, is named after a submarine, fitting considering the music’s depth and shimmering feel. The tracks share a similar structure; subtly developing from an initial single element they become multi-layered compositions only to break like a wave into stillness again. This helps make the album flow effortlessly by. The beauty of this release, however, is the manner in which glistening melodies and iridescent rhythms deftly combine, forming potent yet indefinite, intangible emotions. Despite its minimalism the music is excellently written and thoughtfully performed – at no point do you lose interest.

Standout tracks are “Diable Marin” for its soft, effective instrumentation, “Triton” a more dance-orientated effort and the darker yet welcoming “Mute 3”. “Submers” is a well produced and relaxing recording which fans of ambient and minimalistic techno will appreciate, and undoubtedly should be listened to late at night.
