Haven't done one of these in awhile.
Anyway, you saw the subject line. I think the first three Mercyful Fate albums were amazing, and stand today as three of the best metal albums ever. Not a lot of people include the first (see above) in that. But I think it's great. Their stuff was always kinda scary, and that album is especially so 'cause of the kinda low end production. Sounds like it was produced in hell's basement.
Anyway, Mercyful Fate - A Corpse Without Soul
Listeeeeeen!!!! I am a corpse, I am a corps, I am a corpse with no soul!!!
You are talking about the "Nuns have no Fun" EP Released by Rave ON records? Defo killer release.
That EP was recorded in my old home town Eindhoven. Rave On records was a very small label set up by Jacques Hustixs and Stefan Rooyackers. Jacques used to work at the record shop were I got all of my vinyl in the 80s! Stefan Rooyackers was one of the editors at the Dutch metal mag Aardschok. Rave On Records had a very small budget. Thats why it sounds the way it does.
It was Stefan who after receiving the Mercyful Fate demo was so impressed by it that he traveled to Copenhagen to meet the band and get them to Eindhoven for a few gigs in the Dynamo club.
After I heard the demo at Stefans house we were happy to have them at the Dynamo! When Mercyful Fate proved to be a spectacular live act Stefan and Jacques formed Rave On Records and recorded the now [in]famous "Nuns have no fun" EP.
The EP was a big success in Holland, Germany and Belgium, not in the least because of its provocative cover, so Mercyful Fate were booked for the Aardschok festival in Den Bosch a few miles away from Eindhoven.
After a stunning performance and a successful tour they were picked up by the newly formed Roadrunner Records and the rest is history as they say.
I hope you see the organizational triangle that worked together to make MF a success.
Aarschok Demo -> Dynamo Gig -> Rave On Records NHNF EP -> Aardschok festival -> Roadrunner recording contract.
