Haven't done one of these in awhile.

Anyway, you saw the subject line. I think the first three Mercyful Fate albums were amazing, and stand today as three of the best metal albums ever. Not a lot of people include the first (see above) in that. But I think it's great. Their stuff was always kinda scary, and that album is especially so 'cause of the kinda low end production. Sounds like it was produced in hell's basement.

Listeeeeeen!!!! I am a corpse, I am a corps, I am a corpse with no soul!!!

You are talking about the "Nuns have no Fun" EP Released by Rave ON records? Defo killer release.

That EP was recorded in my old home town Eindhoven. Rave On records was a very small label set up by Jacques Hustixs and Stefan Rooyackers. Jacques used to work at the record shop were I got all of my vinyl in the 80s! Stefan Rooyackers was one of the editors at the Dutch metal mag Aardschok. Rave On Records had a very small budget. Thats why it sounds the way it does.

It was Stefan who after receiving the Mercyful Fate demo was so impressed by it that he traveled to Copenhagen to meet the band and get them to Eindhoven for a few gigs in the Dynamo club.

After I heard the demo at Stefans house we were happy to have them at the Dynamo! When Mercyful Fate proved to be a spectacular live act Stefan and Jacques formed Rave On Records and recorded the now [in]famous "Nuns have no fun" EP.

The EP was a big success in Holland, Germany and Belgium, not in the least because of its provocative cover, so Mercyful Fate were booked for the Aardschok festival in Den Bosch a few miles away from Eindhoven.

After a stunning performance and a successful tour they were picked up by the newly formed Roadrunner Records and the rest is history as they say.

I hope you see the organizational triangle that worked together to make MF a success.

Aarschok Demo -> Dynamo Gig -> Rave On Records NHNF EP -> Aardschok festival -> Roadrunner recording contract.

The EP and Melissa cds are classics. Really groundbreaking too -- there were no other bands (at least that I know about) that sounded anything like them at the time.

Ha, very cool info here! Nice. I used to own the LP variety (with the contraversial cover) but am not sure what I did with it along the way. I was in high school in the 80s. I lived in a rural area and spent many a weekend driving to the nearest city looking for good metal releases. I had the mentioned EP and a vinyl copy of the Live From the Depths of Hell bootleg. Again, what happened to that I cannot say. These days I have to listen to the early years cd to get my dose of Corpse without soul etc.

Fate fucking rules.

Thanks. I was there. MF played many times in the Dynamo club. After the gig they would sit at the bar and have a drink :)

My friends and me used to go out a lot with Timmi Grabber and Michael Denner. Michael is a very nice guy. Timmy thought he was Bruce Lee when he got drunk.

They shure do!! And they always have. :headbang:

Cool story there hawk, Timmi as Bruce Lee would been fun to see:D
Mercyful Fate's Melissa stay even today as one of my favorit albums.

One of my favorite Metal bands of all time. Awesome melodies, killer 2 guitar harmonies, really nice solos and a killer knack for putting the right lyrical content against the right musical backdrop..."Curse of the Pharoahs" and "Satan's Fall" are great examples - I mean, the galloping intro and then the opening line "WAY out in Egypt in the Valley of Kings... - totally sets the mood of the song...awesome shit in my opinion.

My 2 cents...

NOW SAY GOODBYE, TO ALL YOUR FUCKEN ANGELS!!!!!!

Haha. Yeah, that one gives chills for sure. Lots of good insight to Fate here in this thread. I spent many a late night in my high school years going over those albums. Living in a rural area I didn't even know one person who had ever heard of them. I thought they were genius though. I know each album back to front, and STILL put them each in at least once every month or so. Sometimes for a whole week running. Some of my favorite songs are:

Doomed by the Living Dead
A Corpse Without Soul
Devil Eyes
At The Sound of the Demon Bell
Satan's Fall
Melissa
Nightmare
Night of the Unborn

well, etc. etc. I like 'em all.

I still don't think I know anybody personally who would have heard of them... Even if they had heard of Fate, I don't think they'd understand.
