Sometimes a band comes along that is so amazing that you stop and think "this is it, this is the greatest group ever" and then two years later they blow it and come up with rehashed drivel for the rest of their careers. Others might not be the greatest band, but they have that one album that is just incredible, and you wonder why they weren't doing that before, and why did the stop afterwards. So name a few...

Faith No More
I am only familiar with Patton-era FNM, but honestly their only great album for me is Angel Dust, and maybe Album of the Year. I never liked the Real Thing, and King For a Day was dumb.

Life of Agony
One of my favorite debut albums ever is River Runs Red, but the followup was junk after the first 3 tracks. I don't hate Ugly, but knowing that the same group produced the marvelous River Runs Red can be painful.

Dimmu Borgir
Although I'm not familiar with all their material, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is awesome, and the other stuff I've heard is like a bad Cradle of Filth rendition.

Audioslave
Soundgarden was great. Rage Against the Machine was great (outside of Zack de la Choda that is). Why is the combination crapola?

Arcane Sun
Without a doubt, my favorite release ever. The self-titled album was their only proper release. The band recorded a second album, but it was never released by a label.

Geasa
They've released one full-length and an EP with a remastered version of their demo. Mournful black metal with that great Irish flair. Many people in this forum would probably enjoy this band.

Cave In
One of my favorite metalcore bands. THey released a fabulous collection of previous EPs, splits, etc on CD, then released an equally great debut proper. Then they turned space prog-rock. Ugh...

Dayinthelife...
Very good melodic hardcore with two vocalists. A great underground classic with the fitting song, "Killer in the Workplace"

Golden Dawn
Debut is great epic-ish black metal. The second one just plain sucks.

For the record, I think Ugly is LOA's finest album.

Off the top of my head, the closest I can think is M.S.G.. The first two albums are True Metal to the extreme, then henceforth it was the sub-par Assault Attack and two live albums. Maybe that's not fair enough to judge by, but I think I just summed up their entire career 1980 - '84. If there is anything from after this period that is as good as those first two albums, please let me know!

Hmmm....did you do a review? Will I like it do you think?

Now I seem to remember you being quite excited about the new release - was it that bad in comparison to the debut? I've not heard the debut though - should I?

Yeah, I reviewed it. I think everyone will like it. I know Doom bought it, so he will be able to give an unbiased opinion.

Yes, I was excited. Yes, I was disappointed, big time. THe debut is great though. Erik bought it, so maybe he can fill us in with his thoughts on it.....?

It can be I guess. I got mine from Vintage Vinyl, as did spikes77. I believe Doom got his from Relapse mailorder. Last I looked, Relapse had it for $12 p/p

Golden Dawn's debut has recently been re-issued, so that one should not be a problem.

I like it, but it sounds fragmented, and I would've wanted more metal and less synth bits.

Dreamlord: Hey, that's fucking great, I'll be sure to pick up a copy of that... It has BATHORY and DARKTHRONE covers as bonus tracks. Hee hee.

Where is it? Can you provide a hyperlink? Thanks.
That review was lost in the switch to the format. I might still have it on disk or something.

Paul Kearns, vocalist for Arcane Sun, just said on that thread I posted earlier, that the long-lost 2nd album will be given a proper release. Here is his post:

"This is terribly weird, but just as this thread got going, I heard from the old label guy for the first time in AGES and he has begged to release it....more as a way to make up for past mistakes, I think, rather than out of genuine affection for the CD...haha
I am gonna tell him 'yes'...because I doubt that it'll ever see the light of day otherwise - but would that be a better thing?...mmm..."

I like threads like these. Name more:

Fleurety - Min Tid Skal Komme
Everyone on this board will like this album. Very progressive black metal, way ahead of its time.

Red Harvest - Hybreed
Their best, and a haunting apocalyptic album.

False, I've completely come to my senses with these two. King for a Day kicks ass as much as Album of the Year. Sure neither were as good as Angel Dust, but nothing is.

I enjoy Ugly more than River Runs Red now, it's very different but there are a lot of great moments on this album that I had always overlooked (apparently).

I'll have to think up a few more bands later.

Mephistopheles - Songs of the Desolate Ones
Very good melodic Heavy/Thrash(?)/Black album , their last is OK if you aren't picky.

Limbonic Art - Moon in the Scorpio
200% Symphonic Black-Metal , their debut and only good album , the rest is TERRIBLE.

Windir - Arntor
The two others get boring .. and none has matched its atmosphere.

Ah, I'm glad to see you've changed your opinion on the other FNM stuff. I got into the band when The Real Thing came out and picked up their pre-Patton stuff and love all of it. When Angel Dust came out it was just a revelation/evolution to something even more grand, and that is still my favorite album. I think KFAD is my least favorite from the Patton era, as I don't think it's quite as consistent.
Edit to say that I saw the band at a club on the KFAD tour and it was an amazing show. Live Patton is amazing. I've seen Tomahawk twice too--it's never the same night twice with him.

I've also recently come to appreciate The Real Thing, I never really enjoyed that one other than a song or two. Too many keyboards for me back then I suppose. My FNM journey started when Angel Dust came out, 100.3 Pirate Radio would play Midlife Crisis every morning on my way to school and I started to really dig it. Then my grammaw bought me the album for my 14th birthday (1993), huge CD box and all.

Dimmu Borgir definitely... they had the right idea back in the day. Stormblast is one of the most important albums I own. Although I like Enthrone Darkness Triumphant a lot, whenever I listen to the two in chronological order, I just have to let out a sigh.
