Lullacry Fire Within (EP)
Century Media Records August 24th, 2004
By Jason Jordan
The vocalist on Fire Within certainly packs an attitude. At first listen, her presence is basically an irritant, but after repeated spins it wont seem so grating. And, while her voice is no match for the likes of Lacuna Coil or Nightwish, it does fit the music.
The title-track is a rousing introduction to the group, as they comfortably stroll through a typical verse/chorus/lead formula. Surprisingly, the song is successful in the fact that it is catchy and, well, mindless. L.O.V.E. Machine is a cover of W.A.S.P. Be My God (tribal reprise) commences solemnly with a pleasing, well-defined guitar part. After a minute, the song picks up the pace then lulls while retaining its organic feel. The #1 Rebel follows with the same spine as the work before it. Notable is the sometimes-awkward vocal performance that intertwines with the first minute of the track. This is seemingly the most worthless piece on Fire Within. Crucify My Heart Pt. II (piano version) closes the EP and its immediately decipherable why this was included on the album: its emotive and beautifully performed.
Lullacry, while not able to transcend mediocrity, should not be written off just yet. There is potential within this band, and maybe with some determination and perseverance theyll ascertain the revered status that evades many in the music business.
