Machine Head - The Blackening

I have little respect for Rob Flynn and therefore little respect for Machine Head, which is a shame because they have some great material and I have no doubt that this album will be all people claim it to be, but I just wouldn't be able to listen to it and enjoy it for what it is.

He is just such and obvious trend follower and ego maniac. The first album is classic straight up metal, brilliant. The second, they tried to get as heavy as Pantera. The third was an attempt at nu-metal (they even had Fred Durst involved!). The fourth was the same but worse (only with more ADIDAS). The fifth jumped on the metalcore bandwagon, and now they are back to where they started because it is popular again, and they have been talking themselves up like there is no tomorrow for the last year it seems. I struggle to get past all that.

Don't let it get in the way mate, there are alot of bands that do it. Besides that I never really thought of it that way, Supercharger is the only real dint in their catalogue IMO.

Through the Ashes is an awesome album. MH lost me in the late 1990s with the whole trend following thing, but well and truly won me back with that album and their awesome show in Melbourne. Robb regained my respect when he admitted that TBR and Supercharger weren't as good as their previous efforts, and asked the fans what they wanted. I'm looking forward to the new album.

It took a lot of balls for him to do what he did, asking fans what they wanted, but, that is another reason I have lost respect for him. It is pretty sad for a muso to have to ask of others what direction he should be heading, it just seems like he wasn't doing what he wanted at all, but was trying to keep on top of the scene.

Yeah, he could have kept making shit music!

On trying to keep up with current trends, Alice Cooper's probably worse than anyone else!

I reckon I got a promo at home and I recall thinking it sounded much better than the rest of their back catalogue. I might dig it up when I got some time.
