Geez, I have to go with the debut. I'm sorry but I cannot set aside the fact that this was the beginning and for that alone it deserves some credit. Throw in some nostalgia to boot, but I will live and die knowing that "Phantom of the Opera", "Transylvania", "Charlotte the Harlot", "Strange World", goatdammnit the whole damn thing is just metal with attitude with a big fuck you to the punk scene -- "time to die Sex Pistols", the NWOBHM has arrived...aaarrggggghh.....10/10.

The debut is so so strong all the way, slips a tad at the end, but the first five songs more than make up for anything. Killers has a few dodge riffs here and there, but I do agree - UNDERRATED!

There is no doubt that the level of maturity shown on Killers (songwriting-wise) outdoes the debut. Let's face it, they hit a natural stride and still everything felt hungry and loud. And I don't care how overplayed it is, "Wrathchild" is pure genius. But I'm sticking with the debut on principle. Plus "Phantom of the Opera" is in their top 3 songs of all time.

speaking of the "rawness" of the first album and "phantom of the opera" has anyone else noticed the part in the second verse where the guitar on the right speaker drops out for a split second? it took me years before i ever noticed it. but that is fucking raw right there. they probably wouldn't let them redo the take! anyway Killers got my vote mostly because i love adrian smith so much and his presence alone made the album sound better imo.

but i can't contend that there is a single bad song on the debut either.

Killers is more consistent and the better album overall (great riffs throughout), but the debut has the best song of the Paul era in that precursor of all things to come, Phantom Of The Opera. This will certainly make me unpopular here, but I still think neither album, while having undeniable value as the beginning of a legendary career, is any match for the first five with Dickinson.

Maybe my opinion is tainted by Paul becoming a pathetic revisionist...

Personally, I wish they'd pull an Iced Earth, but do it on a larger scale and redo all of the non-Bruce albums, with Bruce. I think Killers was most definitely the beginning of the end for DiAnno. Hell, I listen to The X Factor more often than I do those first two albums.

I would NEVER vote for something like that. Those first two albums are sacred, and besides, I've always preferred the earlier songs with Di'Anno singing. If you want an example of a studio song redone with Bruce at the helm, listen to "Wrathchild" on Ed Hunter......yep, I vote for the original any day of the week.

Iced Earth only did it because their first two albums lack any similar historical significance, so I presume they felt like they had more money, a better singer, better production capabilities to redo those songs. I wouldn't touch the first two Maiden albums, or any classic album for that matter.

With all that said, I WOULD vote for X Factor and Virtual XI being redone with Bruce. Oh yes....and while we're at it, get Adrian Smith back in there too, but knock that Gers shit outta there. :)

Let's not go down that road again, everyone knows how anti-Gers you are already. :loco:

I'll take Bruce's Wrathchild anyday. Seriously, all one has to do is listen to the Beast From Hammersmith from the Ed's Archive boxset. Bruce slays all of those old songs. DiAnno wasn't even in their league then and sure ain't now.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying Bruce does a poor job singing the early material, I'm just saying it should be left untouched just because it's so classic. For sure, in a live environment, it works well with Bruce singing, but I heard that studio version of "Wrathchild" and it just sounded wrong for some reason.

Anyway, there is a much better case to redo X Factor I think. Fuck how Blaze Bailey feels, they should just spend a week getting the vocals down, remaster the production, and get the album out there. No touring necessary, just a quick maintenance job which I think people will want to buy. Virtual XI would be a tough sell even with Bruce at the helm just because the songs are horrible.

A big NO to all those ideas! Both singers are suited to their era and theirs alone - Paul with the raw voice for the raw music, Blaze keeping the low end for darker, atmospheric X Factor songs. Bruce just don't suit 'em, especially now that his voice is worn a tad.
