I haven’t really paid that much attention to Manowar in the past, for whatever reason, but this DVD box set is sure to go down as a classic whatever you think about the band’s music. This is a group who have had many arrows and spears thrown at them in their time as recording artists and yet show a resilience to fight for true metal that puts the hoards of young upstart sellouts to shame. The first DVD is a concert recorded in Germany at the Earthshaker Festival in 2005. With over two and a half hours of concert footage of classic Manowar songs, the event is turned up to eleven by the inclusion of a full choir and orchestra on some of the songs. Metallica eat your heart out! The crowning glory of the night though has to be the song ‘Battle Hymn’ when the current line up are joined by all the previous Manowar members onstage to belt out this anthem. Even as someone who had never heard the song before, I couldn’t help but feel the hairs start to stand up on the back of my neck.

The second DVD is in two parts. The first allows us to catch a glimpse behind the scenes with a ‘road to Earthshaker’ documentary. Highlights include Joey DeMaio berating the choir’s conductor for not being metal enough and seeing the guys relaxing into the songs during rehearsal with all three guitarists playing at once. The second part charts the experience of what a punter might have seen if they had gone to the Manowar convention. We are led through the three day event by Marjo, head of the Manowar fan club and now an employee of Magic Circle Music. It’s truly amazing to watch the level of devotion from both fans and band. There is a total trust here that is reciprocated on both sides and many of the fans are documented saying how Manowar have made them want to do everything to the best of their ability. Uplifting power metal at its best! Highlights of the convention include displays of swordsmanship from around the world, musician clinics with the band members, an arm wrestling competition, a beer drinking competition that gets a little out of hand and a Miss Manowar competition that is not to be missed.

The Absolute Power is a wonderful DVD package and can be enjoyed by a seasoned fan or someone completely new to the band. May Manowar rock for years to come and, of course, Death To False Metal!
