Mastodon - Blood Mountain

Mastodon's best so far, I'd say. But there are parts of the two previous albums that I really enjoy that aren't present in the newest release.. but eh, if I want to hear those elements, I'll go listen to the older albums. Mastodon is one of my favorite bands and this album has only enforced that.

Ok so I know I called Mastadon bad names, but I'm thinking of buying Leviathan when I finished reading Moby Dick. What's the connection between them? Is it an entire album based on? Just cover art? Or somewhere inbetween?

I honestly can't get enough of Blood Mountain. I like that they're all about the riff this time around and not just trying to show off Brann's playing, which I love, btw. But the riffs this time around rule!

Yeah, now they ALL show off. "Capillarian Crest" is an almost completely uninhibited wankfest on the parts of ALL OF THEM, and I guess I just noticed a lot more guitar pyrotechnics this time around. It's quite a good album, but I think the way they are widely considered THE best metal band around is still pretty ridiculous even if they're getting better every album (Remission sucked).

It's okay, but it sounds too much like Remission, which I hate. Leviathan was great, and I doubt they can do much better.

I've only heard "Capillarian Crest" ... yeah, this'd be a first foray into the (overtly) hardcore-influenced side of metal for me, and I'm not sure I'm ready to pick this one up yet.

Leviathan is a real listening pleasure. Strong musicanship all around. But, NFU raises a good point, the vocalist can grate on my nerves after awhile. That said, I do like the music.
