Anyone else diggin' this album? It's fukkin' amazing IMO! True prog genius! :kickass:

Anyone who likes their prog the way the 70s masters did it, MUST check out this album! And the best part is that although there's 70s prog all over this bitch, it does NOT sound dated! :kickass:

I really like the CD and I have my ticket to see them at the Metro later this month. They are going to play the entire CD live on this tour.

I don't particularly see what's so great about them, but whatever floats your boat. :tickled:
Will... have you heard the new one? I've never been a huige fan of their studio work, but the new one is unreal. A true evolution in their sound. Only time will tell how well it holds up to constant playing, but this has the feel of a landmark release... or as close as anyone has come in quite some time.

Well, for me...every time I listen to it, I hear something new & it just keeps getting better. Love it! :kickass:

Yep... that is the true sign of a great disc. It seems at this point, the band's only limitation is their vocals.

Zod

Which is weird, because I -love- the vocals. Dirty, raw, unique (though, not to be repeititve, I hear a blend of Staley, Osbourne, and clean vocaled Akerfeldt).

I realize its not the quality of singing on say.. Genesis, Journey, or King Crimson...but it works for me.

I can totally understand why the vocals would be a turn off for some...no different than Geddy for Rush. Some people hate the vocals, others love it. I, personally love Geddy's vocals...at least on the old stuff. But when people tell me they can't stand his singing, I can't argue...hahaha

Also, keep in mind that everyone in Mastodon sings...and lead vocals by 3 of them. Weirdly enough, all three are somewhat similar sounding & sometimes it's hard to tell who's singing. For example, the very first line of the first song Obliveon is sung by the drummer, Brann...as well as all the lines of that song with that same feel. Weird, but it works for the song...very 70s prog...love it. :kickass:

Interesting too that Brann writes most of the lyrics & melodies for the band. Very cool how they create music together.

Yeah, yeah...I know I sound like a fanboy, John!!! :p

Man, I've always liked Mastodon, though I'm not what I'd call a major fan of them or anything. I have yet to hear the new cd but everything I've heard about it seems like this is their landmark release, so I'm very eager to hear it.

Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with the vocals. However, I suspect as the band continues to evolve their sound, the vocals may become a limiting factor. I've read they're not actually able to pull off the clean vocals live (I'll find out in May). And if they want to go into a proggier direction, the vocals may create a hurdle.

Ok, I've now heard the new Mastodon cd. I think it's motherfucking GREAT. This is just soooooo what I want to hear right now. It's heavy, it's technical, and it's catchy, and that wins for me. I also really like the vocals, contrary to some opinions I see.

This is one case where all the hype and praise didn't lead to a disappointment for me, this is even better than I'd expected.

Hell yeah!!:kickass:

If done well, the movie could kick ass!! The concept of the album is amazing...but you wouldn't know that cuz you don't care about Mastodon...or their new album. :p

The bonus DVD that comes with the album explains the concept in fairly good detail & it's very cool! Probably another reason why I love this new album so much...in addition to the musical aspect.
