Mastodon- Curl of the Burl

Yeah, I'm really not digging the new Mastodon tracks I've heard lately. The last couple things I've heard just seem like lazy writing and there's no energy anywhere in the music. I'm all for progressing and veering away from earlier styles, but they don't seem to be doing it well. As much as I hate to say it, I think Mastodon has finally lost their edge.

How dare they not consult the fan memo's on how to sound. For shame Mastodon for making music you enjoy. For shame!!!!!!!

Sounds like the progression Mastodon has been making. Good is subjective anyway. I dig it, but then again, I have no say in what Mastodon should be since I'm not in the band.

Yeah I'm not digging the two songs I've heard so far. Too bad. I mean, good for them and more power to them for growing / progressing musically instead of just trying to do the same shit all the time but it kinda reminds me of when Amorphis hit that "Am Universum" period ...

Just as well really ... So much cool music coming out in the next couple months

All that is true, but it doesn't stop me from being disappointed with them when I think something they put out is sub-par from what I've been trained to expect from the group.

This sounds to me like it's a song only for the sake of them needing a song. I don't feel any life coming from it. It has the feel of a song that nobody cares about.

I remember that Amorphis moment. I remember being a bit thrown off, but it grew on me and I still dig the album. And true, a lot of good releases coming before the end of the year.

Same here ... I was thrown off and a bit disappointed and like you it did eventually grow on me to an extent ... Then came "Far From The Sun"

Point being that it was a gradual move towards something that no longer reminded me of Amorphis. Thankfully they came back with "Eclipse" and all has been great since

I'll wait for Mastadon's "Eclipse" ;)

By the way, the guys from Amorphis are friends of mine ... Even THEY aren't happy about that particular time period but it was something they had to try and do at the time

Really? That's very cool to get the story straight from the band. Its easy to kind of assume things when a band does something different. Just shows bands do feel that they have to try different things out.

Don't get me wrong, they're proud of those albums but looking back they know they kinda lost their way. Funny story: Santeri emailed me a couple months ago and says "Esa just called me and told me "FFTS" just got certified gold in Finland ... I figured he was drunk and trying to prank me. I didn't know what to say when the label actually confirmed it. I think THEY were surprised too!"

That's pretty interesting. Guess it shows that even with their change of path fans stuck with them. I remember jamming to 'Tales from the Thousand Lakes' when first learning to play guitar and hoping to start a band like Amorphis......in Kentucky

Call me weird but I actually really like this song. Maybe my tastes are too far into radio rock territory these days but I think this is actually pretty decent - wasn't sold on the other one though.

Having said that whilst I did enjoy Crack the Skye it didn't do much for me - Blood Mountain was Mastodon peak imho.

Did anyone of you notice that production and mixing is done by Mike Elizondo? :err: That's quite interesting decision to say the least.
