I don't what to say about it. It is nothing special. I mean they pretty much played it note for note. It does not feel right to me. It is lacking that something that made the orignal so freaking powerful. I recall the first time I heard the orginal and the feeling it gave me when those guitars first hit the bends on the slow part. It was an overwhelming feeling of awwww. I don't know if that sounds werid but whatever. Another thing is that the recording is way to raw. It takes away from everything. Ehh...

You know what sounds weird on this version ? They don't reach the fucking note, the bend is too slow and the right note is not reached !!! It sounds completely flat and out of tune !!! :ill::zombie::Puke:

I think the SNARE is the main problem, it was distracting the whole time...something about it just seemed WRONG for the song. Maybe just because the song was played so close to the original that the few parts (such as snare sound and the beginning of the first solo) that were different sounded bad to me. The second and third guitar solo and the harmony thing after the bass solo were changed up a bit and didn't sound too bad at least.

It's reached, just too slowly I think? It does sound weird. The guitars in that section also sound like they were recorded in a small room with a shitty mic.

the second bend reaches the target note, but a bit behind when it should.. the first bend absolutely does not hit the target note at all.... falls just shy.

The raw recording is probably just because it was done in a rush, presumably during the sessions for their new album - so I can't imagine they spent much time on it.

To be honest, I haven't sat down and compared every song note for note, I don't really see the point in that. I don't think I've EVER heard a cover that's perfect in every last detail even on really simple songs, so covering material like Master Of Puppets I didn't expect amazing accuracy. I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect every nuance to be identical. Because the original versions are held in such high regard, it seems like everyone is being overly critical of the covers.

EDIT: But yeah, the first bend is out...

Steve

I'd guess that they were approached by whoever put the CD together "do you want to do a song?" "uh.... sure." Went off and learned the song, recorded it five minutes later and were done with.

There's nothing wrong with paying tribute to bands you respect or have influenced you, it's all cool and nobody's forcing anybody to listen to it (moreover it's a FREE cd) !!! The only problem is when your bends "don't reach the fucking notes !!!" :D

so far, I've heard 2 songs off of that tribute CD. That mastodon version of orion...I'm going to have to agree...it's just nothing special. I was hoping maybe Mastodon could somehow turn me into a fan with this cover (I really don't dig any of their stuff..), but alas...maybe their new album...

I also heard Trivium's version of Master of Puppets. You know, it was well executed...although, something about it sounded very sterille. The guitars lacked feeling or something. what do you guys think?

It was probably recorded digitally, which we all know ruins the whole thing. At least that is what Dirk told me!

My thoughts:

Battery - Not bad. Musically was fine. Vox lacked enthusiasm.

M.O.P. - Best cover on the CD. Trivium did a fantastic job.

TTTSNB = Not bad. A little boring but could have been much worse.

Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - More like Welcome Homo. Gay ass cover. Never heard this band and now I know why.

Disposable Heroes - Musically great. Vox sucked ass. I love Chimaira but the vox and fx are the weakest part of that band.

Leper Messiah - First listen I was unsure. Second listen I realized that I consider this the 2nd best cover on the CD. This was always one of my favorite Metallica songs.

Orion - Fairly enjoyable. I didn't like the cacophonic guitar bends near the end of the song. Seemed totally unnecessary for such a classic song.

Damage, Inc. - Not bad if your into that type of thing. Music was great but covered with ChunderVox.

All joking aside: Info from one of their roadies I know:

The Trivium cover was done in 3 days I believe, they had the tab book out, and the CD, listening to each part of the song to play it exact. Only difference is it's 10bpm faster than the original, and knocks just about a minute off the track. And get this the guitars, were all done using Amp Farm, no cabs or heads! So I say, who says digital sucks?
