Matt Zane – Words As Carriers
Inzane Records INZ7113-2 2001
By Russell Garwood

“Words As Carriers” is porn director Matt Zane’s debut album, released through his own label, Inzane Records. The thirty-eight tracks comprising it are primarily spoken word – some verse, some prose. Matt is responsible for the content, some of which is excellent, for example “The Story”. This is a monologue charting a child’s loss of innocence – the realisation that his parents won’t always be able to protect him set within a juvenile frame of reference. Other tracks such as “Abuse” I find less effective due to the uneven rhyming patterns and manner of performance. The musical tracks, such as “Searching The Sound” include world elements and some impressive singing by Matt. All the tracks are swathed in a dark atmosphere, aided by the music - percussive cowbells, African drums and shakers give the multi-layered choirs and voice an eerie feel. Some songs make use of the acoustic guitar and piano, while others successfully use noise and screaming to create the desired chaos.

The recited tracks focus on subjects like death, abuse, sex, drugs, suicide and general dark imagery – ranging from ancient Egypt to everyday social situations. My favourite tracks have to be “The Story”, “Searching The Sound” for its catchy melodies, and “Old Friends”, a morose yet memorable song. Overall this is an interesting album, and the musical tracks and many of the spoken-word ones are very effective. Some, however, can begin to drag as much ground is re-covered repeatedly. Perhaps this is an album for anyone after something new, who doesn’t mind thirty eight tracks of nearly solid spoken-word.
