Meditation

I wouldn't be surprised if you don't get a lot of feedback on meditation on a metal forum, as meditating is probably not very metal. I used to meditate very frequently in times where I have been under stress all the time and I also used it to release negative emotions I had. I still meditate occasionally but don't really feel the need to anymore as I'm very relaxed, focused and happy most of the time.

Meditation is very metal because meditation is "evil" according to most christianity based religions... :D

It is a spiritual practice that doesn't have any stupid religious lore attached to it, so religions tend to be afraid of it.

My preferred meditation method:

After doing some physical exercise, lie down on a flat and not too soft surface and relax all your muscles while breathing slowly and deeply.
To avoid falling asleep, concentrate on something like your breathing, counting down from lets say 1000, repeating a positive affirmation, visualizing something, doing powers of 2 (0,1,2,4,8,16...65556), imagining healing and regenerating lifeforce coming to your body from outside...
I think it is very similar to the "transcendental meditation" - a very easy and enjoyable way to relax your body and mind.

Oh !

I forgot to underline that all counting and repeating affirmations etc is done only in your thoughts to allow muscles that are normally used when talking to relax too.

How do meditate ?

I have tried many times to actively search relaxing myself but it seems my brain activity dominates any attempds. When I go to bed, unless I have had a very active day which makes me genuinely tired, I have trouble falling asleep before hours sometimes because I can't stop thinking about things, wether they are important or stupid. When I try to clear my thoughts, 10s later I'm thinking of something new and realize that only a minute later

I know that if someone guides me from the outside, I can work. I remember at school when I was a kid or an adolescent, and our sport teacher asked us to lie and with her voice would guide us, I would feel incredibly relaxed.

I am doing a lot of exercises too these days because I am studying vocal exercises on a daily basis now.

I am gonna try your methode, Mutant !

I've been doing PMR for years. (Didn't even know it was called that) Really works and helps with my anxiety issues. From my experience it's best to do it when you're NOT stressed. That way the two don't relate to each other when muscle memory kicks in. When the anxiety/stress comes you kind of "turn it on" and takes you back to that relaxing state.

I do it in the morning right after I wake up.

Just finished 20 minutes of Zazen, Zen sitting. It's kind of like meditation, but you're not really trying to relax, change your state of consciousness or anything really. Trying to relax is like trying to not have a goal or desiring not to desire. It doesn't really work. Paradoxically the only way to really, really relax mentally is to give up trying to relax, or thinking you have to because something needs fixing. Again, you can't just decide to do this, because your motives get in the way. Meaning you can't give up trying to relax if you think that's how you should relax. Phew.

Zazen just works for me, all it involves is sitting facing a wall on a cushion that lifts you a few inches up, in half or full lotus posture. And a hand posture I forget that name of. Either way its a pretty standard Soto Zen posture. When thoughts come in the form of images, judgements, internal conversations, fantasies about the future and or memories, just notice them when you notice them, and let them go when they want to.

And that's it.

It can be as hard or as easy as you want, the more you want it to do something for you, the harder it gets. I find it great because it really stops me from hiding from my own bullshit, but for the most part I've learned that my experience is massively improved when I stop making so much effort to try and fix it all the time.

I can't say I've ever heard of counting being a part of Zen practice, but I've heard of it in mindfulness stuff that Thich Nhat Hanh (Who is from a Zen background) does. Saying that, there are a lot of variations on the practice, It's just i find the classical Soto setup to be least distracting and the most straight forward. You don't even really have to get the lotus posture to do it, it's just the most stable and effortless, straight-backed, upright posture I've ever known, so its very conducive to not doing anything. Saying that, I only do half lotus most of the time and even then I do stretches for a few minutes before. I also have to have a really thick cushion to sit on, because it really helps to increase the angle of your legs to the ground, which lowers tension.

But if you can sit on a cushion with both your knees touching the floor, that's enough.

I've been meditation though almost everyday before going to bed for about 15 to 30 minutes. It not only helps me to clear my mind and control my emotions, but I sleep better! Can't complain about that!

i've been thinking about this recently, thought about picking up yoga actually but don't know where to start... as i understand it's not something to just casually 'pick up' anyhow.

i'll try what you guys have posted so far.

I meditate. I try to become master of my own thoughts. I watch the development of my thoughts and neutralizing them. Feelings (which kind whatsoever) arise from thoughts! And when you unmask the thought while the formation is going on, you can neutralize them. It needs a lot of training, but this is a honorable goal. Since I´m doing it, I feel like I lived 30 years in a garage and now I´m finally alive ;)

Don't overcomplicate things.

Simplify, filter out all religious bullshit and you will have the pure essence of what a real meditation should be.
