Melechesh - Sphinx

Hey hey here we go:

Overall: 8/10
Muscianship: 8/10
variation: 7/10
Hangbangability: 10/10

Melechesh might be a band that not many people are familier wit, but they damn deserve to be. Just as nile shook up death metal Melechesh have done the same thing to black metal with "Sphinx."

From the opening salvo of "Mercury and Mercury" this album just thumps and never lets up. It has true agression and yet is intellectual at the same time.

The drumming from Absu man Proscripture defeys my use of hyperbole... it really defeys dammit. He varies beats and introduces subtle touches of tribal percussion when variations is needed.

One of the key strengths of the album is that is integrates eastern melodies and ideas into the trad metal framework without needing to be overt about it. It creates a more subtle effect. Proscriptors beat in the verses of "Secrets of Sumerian Spynxology" is a good example of this.

It has a decent amount of variation in riffs, groves, feels and features a couple of ambient moments similar to those found in the "In their Darkened Shrines" 4 part suite from Nile's last album.

Overall a great album and well worth checking out if your into black/death metal and other extreme stuff. Its far from traditional black metal however and that might alienate some. Also some may feel that it is derivative of Nile in many ways. I find this to not be true however. An excellent album of great, intelligent and extreme metal with an eastern feel.

Long live Mesopotamian metal!

Yup! This album fucking rocks, and it has really nothing to do with "cradle-black-riffs".. No, no! It´s more trashy blackmetal with these superior eastern-influeced riffing... Great shit!!! '

I just ordered Sphynx last night.....mainly because I found out that it's Proscriptor on drums though. =) He's the most stylish there is.

Melechesh are to blackthrash what Nile is to death....except Melechesh are much clearer and better developed with their theme, and the melodies are far more important.
