Meshuggah - Gods of Rapture - 2:38-3:01

Meshuggah is possibly my favorite band ever. It's so amazing to hear their early shit and listen to what they're doing now and comprehend that it's the same band, they really did revolutionize a segment of the genre and virtually spawned an entire sound/feel by themselves.

If Contradictions Collapse was released today, I think it'd be hailed as one of the best thrash metal albums in history. Listening to "None" is like watching a transformation happen.. it's still the same old Thrashy Meshuggah from CC and Testbild , but you can tell they stumbled onto something new and spent a lot of time tinkering with it. DEI was a complete masterpiece and by the time Chaosphere came out, it was apparent that they were simply paving new ground.

Funny thing is, when I first heard Meshuggah back in like 2000, I didn't really like them that much. I eventually bought DEI and then Nothing (cuz the 8-string concept interested me) when it came out in '02, and didn't really like them much either. Then one day, in probably 2004, I was cleaning out my car, found the CD's, and gave them a listen. All of a sudden it made sense, and it's pretty much been an obsession ever since. It's the first music that I ever had to "figure out" how to listen to, but once I did, it became some of the most important music I own.

Meshuggah were one of the first Swedish bands I was introduced to in the early 00s or late 90s. It took what seemed like years to be able to digest their music, but now... 10 years later they are my favourite metal band, and one of the only ones still releasing records that I will listen to!

I remember when None came out. A dude gave me a copy of a Concrete managment mix tape and Sickening was on it. It blew me away. I went straight to this little hole in the wall metal cd shop and grabbed it.

I think songs one through four on it are the best songs they have ever written. I wish it would have been a full length.

I am really not very interested in anything past Chaosphere, but None and DEI are pure gold to me.

Catch 33, Autonomy Lost 00.00 - Sum 7:18.

Dear god yes, Dehumanization 2:12 might be the heaviest thing I've ever heard.

And yes, the solo section leading up to that bit in Gods or Rapture is friggin awesome too :)

I also think that Destroy Erase Improve has some of the tightest rhythm guitar tracking I've ever heard and I LOVE the guitar tone on that album.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't they use the Mesa/Boogie .50 caliber on this album? I'm thinking about picking one up used at a local shop.... I love the guitars!

Or how about the musical wizardry in the old song "Greed" from Contradictions Collapse? The big section from 2:37-5:12 is just boner-inducing. The thrashy riff at 4:22 makes me want to blow up my neighbors car.
