Dragonforce released their first album, but have been around a couple of years for example...

I don't know how to define newcomer. They just put it as an option on the Metal Awards thingy

Newcomer - a band who have come onto the 'worldwide' scene in 2003.

Ie, a band who released their first cd/ep/whatever.

didn't Belle and Sebastien once win a best newcomer award in some crap awards ceremony like the Brits, despite just releasing their 3rd album?

Something like that.

Queens Of The Stone Age won a Kerrang newcomer award in 2000 despite having played with Metallica at Milton Keynes in front of 50,000 people about fifteen months before.

No doubt Evanescence will scoop a few newcomer awards too, despite releasing an album in 1999...
