If you have a question about metal terminology put it here, made this because i find myself scrambling to figure out what some of this shit means from time to time.

what is chunky riffing?

I hear the phrase "Math core" or some variety of "math" applied to Dillinger Escape Plan why the hell is this? Has anyone else ever heard this?
And why are there so many lables and subgenres of music I.E.
power metal
hard core
punk
emo
death metal, black metal, whats the difference anyway?
prog
speed
thrash

you get the picture.

the primary difference i have found is death metal has growling vocals based on many differnt things from morbid shit to anything you can imagine, black metal is more screaching vocals from waht ive heard and it is satanic, or the majority of it is. If someone could offer a clearer defintion of black metal please do because i know how picky people can be about black metal. Its hard to say that either are based on speed and technicality because it varies so much. Arch enemy has good melodic dm and morbid angel has some good slow/melodic(same thing) dm.

I believe it stands for very strange and difficult rhythm patterns or something like that

yup. DEP, Meshuggah, Isis, and some others (Death's Sound of Perseverance is considered to be a math metal album) are labeled this.

and the different sub genres is for different sounds of heavy metal, or any other large music genre. one genre can have several different sounds.

cincy i spose the only reason there is so many labels for diff metal would be due to marketing the product,it would be pretty boring if every band with a heavy sound was just metal when they do in fact have a unique sound.

i am sure bands would want to have some say in what they think they sound like.

i would label spineshank and disturbed as metal for example but it seems to be very hip to call them nu metal.

its all good

what is power metal? waht is doom metal? what is the REAL definition of black metal? waht i know is that its satanic and screeching vox, is this true? any other forms of metal that arent really obvious that you know what they mean post em'

not some damn bands that are it, but what does each represent tell me something like death metal: growlin vox, fast guitars, fast drums, shit like that,

Well I always thought the difference of death and black was the vocals, plus black metal sometimes uses keyboards, but I would like a better definition too.

I think Slaughter of Soul would know...

well with most black metal bands ,mayhem burzum i think there main aim is to get the guitars to sound as shitty as possible, really searing vocals and the drum sound is also very shitty hehehehehe
