I need to know what bands have changed your life, your perpective and outlook on metal music or music in general?

What bands can't you live without?

What metal or any music for that matter means that much to you?

Opeth, of course, but apart from that.... NIN? They mean a lot to me. Reemon, there are lots, cos I couldn't live (well not happily I don't think) without music. All bands that I like mean sumthing to me.

Also Slipknot have changed my life, I've never felt such extreme hatred ;) I read an interview (i was bored) and Corey had the fucking cheek to compare slipknot to Tool.

I was introduced to extreme metal by a friend about 5 years ago. I liked some of it, but never was really engrossed in it until I heard Entombed's Wolverine Blues. For whatever reason, that album hit me like a ton of bricks (maybe cuz that's how heavy their guitar sounds is). Then I discovered Clandestine, and later I took a chance on Slaughter of the Soul by ATG. At that point I was hooked. The combination of aggression and melody started me down the path that I'm on now. Then I discovered Opeth, hearing Nectar on Blackend Vol.2. The rest is history...

In terms of bands I can't live without:

Opeth -- Do I really need to explain why?
Dark Tranquillity -- The epitome of beauty meets darkness.
Dissection -- Blackened metal insanity, one of the most underrated bands ever.
At the Gates -- Nothing gets my blood boiling quite like them.

I could live comfortably if the only CD's I could have were their respective complete works.

Metallica, despite Im not listening to their music these days.
I've spent something like 4-5 years listening preety much only to them. I can say, generally, without them, I wouldn't find music so interesting.

Metallica: I don't really listen to them anymore either, but they are the band that got me into metal so their pretty important.

Dream Theater: The band that thought me to truely appreciate music and introduced me to progressive metal and countless other underground bands.

Opeth: Besides being the best of all time they also introduced me to more extreme bands.

Honorable mentions: Nevermore, Pain of Salvation, Dark Tanquillity, Symphony X

n.p. Nevermore -- In Memory

Well for me it all started 3 years ago when a new friend of mine introduced me to Marilyn Manson. Hmmmm. Quite the trip. hehe
Anyways without MM and my friend i wouldnt be where i am right now.

As far as metal goes, i always liked Metallica and Pantera. But on the more extreme side of it, Slayer was the first band i listened to, 2 years ago. They were pretty fast compared to NIN hehe.
Reign In Blood will always the best thrash album for me.

I cant live without Opeth. Basically because its been my favorite band for more then a year now and they bring much happiness an joy. :spin:

Metallica. I always thought Master was a Masterpiece. :o
And the solos. Wooo. Cant really get better then fade to black, etc.

Pink Floyd. Ok ive been only listening to them for 2 years but they remind me of great moments, great psychadelic music, etc.

Emperor. Fuck i hated them 2 years ago. They changed my perception of black metal along with Cof and Dimmu, and basically its my favorite kind of music now.

NP: Alas - Silencing The Sorrow

Opeth
Katatonia
Life of Agony
Nevermore
Depeche Mode

Of all the cd's I have, these 5 bands have their albums spun the most by far. I discovered them all at about the same time and they really got me deeper into music. I could trash all my other cd's and keep all of these bands albums and I'd be just as happy.

N/P: Opeth-Blackwater Park

Bands that mean a lot to me...Depeche Mode and Pink Floyd. (not metal, but so important to what I am today) Metallica was the band that got me into metal, but it was the industrial side of the music, like NIN that got me really IN to music. From that point I really started to look for the hard-to-find stuff that no one heard of..and started to get into the stuff I am into today.

I would have to say Black Metal in general, without Black Metal I wouldn't be listening to good music today.

Opeth-They have changed my life so much for the better.

Vintersorg
Maiden
Metallica
Ulver

The following, in that order, have made the most impact on my life.

OPETH
LED ZEPPELIN
METALLICA

I think of other bands that have really opened my eyes to music like Katatonia, Tool, Iron Maiden and White Snake. But, not like these 3.

Graven face, she said my name.

The two bands that got me into music are Amorphis and Sentenced (in this order). "Tales from the Thousand Lakes" was among the first CD's I ever bought and even though it doesn't hit me that hard anymore, it always has a place in my heart. "Amok", on the other hand, is a true metal classic, featuring one of the best vocal-job ever (by Taneli Jarva - check his new band The Black League now!).

But the band I have followed the most is without any doubt Dark Tranquillity! I don't have the words to discribe how they have affected me through their art.

And then there is Opeth...

-Villain (np: The Black League - Doomsday Sun EP)

The first record I bought was Metallica "Load" in 1996. Through Metallica I got into metal. Opeth was significant since their music really opened my mind for different ways of musical expression.
Shostakovich Symphony No. 8 as well, and still is my favourite classical piece. Basically, as I began accepting various forms of metal, it was easier for me to branch out later to jazz and prog and avant-garde and other exciting fields of music. But THE band for me is Anathema.

1. Opeth , Cradle of Filth , Death , In Flames , Emperor , Katatonia , Nirvana , Marilyn Manson - I wouldn't be into metal if I didn't listen to him, Moist , The tea party , The Sacred Innocent , Wars of Winter , Rage against the machine , OLP

2. Well all my favorite bands are in the metal Genre but i'm pretty much sick of the average metal band today , I hate every death metal band I've heard (not swedish death metal ) , I have nothing else to say . I like anything unique .

3. The music scene in general today is so corrupt it's sick , bands are payed millions of dollars to make music that takes no skill to play , I can see like 60,000 a year or something but a million is just to much .

4. Opeth , Katatonia , In Flames , Wars of Winter (you wouldn't understand) , Thales , Nirvana , OLP (Their not so popular songs)

5. Progressive Metal , Melodic Metal , Viking Metal , Alternative stuff .

Yeah manosonite would be the word , Posters , cd's , t-shirts .

Death is not Death Metal , don't you read anything Chuck says .

In Flames aren't Death Metal either

Opeth of course.

Megadeth- Although I can't stand them now, when I was a kid back in '86-'87 or so Megadeth introduced me to the world of more extreme music with "Peace Sells". They were one of my first huge influences and I regard their older work as metal classics.

Metallica- I hate everything they've done since "And Justice..." but basically everything I said above for Megadeth goes for Metallica too.

Rush- a huge influence for me and an introduction into complex, progressive music. Started listening to them about 10 years ago.

Iron Maiden- I was just an 8 year old kid when I first heard "Run to the Hills". From then on, I pretty much knew that metal was going to be a big part of my life. Again, these guys are a huge influence. Very few bands can match the memories these guys bring back for me.
