Damn, your post went up 3 times! Embarrassing isn't it?
The song "Hell's breath" was originally an instrumental and went through some changes.Same thing with "Death Row" it's one of those 2 songs but I haven't listened to those dirty old tapes in almost 20 years!
Kirk is very talented that is so biased and stupid to say that. His leads on "kill "em All" were just lethal when I first heard it back in '83!
Gary Holt of Exodus isn't too fond of those very early tunes which is why a lot of them may never see the light of day as the band evolved as musicians. A long time ago Gary told me he wanted to do an Exodus farewell gig where they'd even play some of the Kirk tunes and maybe have Kirk jam on a song or 2 as well as other past members but since Exodus became a full time active band again that doesn't look likely.
What the hell?!
When I posted it originally, I got a message saying ''page not found'', so I thought it hadn't posted properly. Luckily I copied it while it was loading, so I just had to paste the repost. Obviously when it said ''page not found'', it had posted the post. Stupid thing!
I don't think I've ever heard ''Death Row". I have heard a lot the demos Kirk did with Exodus, but I don't remember hearing that one...I have heard one of the demos of "Hell's Breath", (cant remember if it was the instrumental!) along with the proper studio version of it on "Let There Be Blood". I think it would have sounded better in standard tuning with Paul or Zetro singing, but Rob Dukes does okay I guess.
Kirk is very talented! It irks me when people say he isn't a good writer, and even worse, that he isn't a very good guitar player.
Being a guitar player myself, I can vouch for the fact that many of his solos are in fact, very difficult to play. Yep, he does use the wah a lot, but that's just his style. I dont think there's anything wrong with it, nor do I think he's a bad player because of it. Mike Ammot from Arch Enemy uses the wah pedal a lot in his solos, yet I don't hear the same criticsm levelled at him. It's just trendy for some metalheads to bash Metallica I guess...
I think there's a lot of good material on that very early Exodus stuff, and the fact Kirk thought some of it was good enough for Metallica is just proof of that! Also, "Impaler" I think is easily good enough that if it had been on "Bonded By Blood", it would have been just as good as the other classic songs on that album. I think perhaps the fact a lot of those songs were partly written by Kirk may be at least part of the reason why that material was never used. After all, they still played "Impaler" live sometimes, long before they finally recorded a proper studio version of it. So Gary must have thought that song at least, was a a good Exodus song. The only way I could possibly see Kirk playing live with Exodus, is if Exodus ever play any more shows with Metallica. If that ever happens, I think it would be a big missed opportunity, if Kirk doesn't join them on stage for a song or two.
