This ones for Jenna.
I'm glad someone did this (and why didn't I think of it?)
This is a comaprison with some old Metallica Classics you know compared with old live and demo recordings from 1982 of The songs Exodus used to play that Kirk reused the riffs he wrote when he was in that band. very interesting and I've been telling people about this for the last 24 years! Check it out!

Ha! Sure puts Lars's "Stealing music" crusade into perspective.

But put it this way, rock music is all about stealing. It's all based on old blues riffs. You don't think Page, Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, Santana, Vaughn, Harrison didn't just take old blues riffs and modify them? That is the sign of a good guitarist. The guy who did not learn the blues, doesn't know Robert Johnson from a hole in the wall and just solos freely not linked to guitar history just doesn't do it right. The guitar is made for the blues.

You either steal from the old blues guys, steal from those who stole from old blues guys, or you steal from yourself. Modify it and make it your own. That is The Rock!

I wouldn't call this stealing. Kirk wrote those riffs for originally those Exodus songs when he was in that band. Exodus quit playing those songs and began writing better tunes. Nothing wrong with reusing your own riff in a different song when you wrote it plus those old Exodus tunes were only on live bootlegs and were never actually recorded except the tune "Impaler".

The only 2 songs that I know of that Kirk used his Exodus riffs in, is ''Impaler'',(The last riff in "Trapped Under Ice") and the riff in the "Die by my hand" part in "Creeping Death". Which Kirk originally wrote in a song called ''Die By His Hand''. Exodus' guitarist Gary Holt said he wrote that line, and that Metallica just changed it from from "his hand", to "my hand". He said it annoyed him having thousands of people singing his lyrics, and they didnt even realise!

I didn't know about the "Master Of Puppets" riff being originally in an Exodus song! Though it just sounds similar to it, rather than being the exact same. But it just shows, Kirk can write some awesome riffs, as well as being a great guitarist! :)

Another riff from "Trapped Under Ice" was taken from an old Exodus tune called "Death Row" or maybe it was "Hell's Breath" I can't remember right now but I have these tunes on really old cassettes of live shows, demos & rehearsals.

The first time I heard the song MOP was at a NYE gig Metallica headlined in '85/86. Exodus,Metal Church & Megadeth were also on the bill. One person from each of those bands is dead now!

Metallica were long over due to start playing some new tunes at the time and the first one they played was MOP and right away I recognized the old Exodus riff from the song "Death & Domination" off their old "Whipping Queen" demo that Kirk played on.

Well, ''Hell's Breath" was recorded for the re-recorded version of "Bonded By Blood". Ive heard that song, and cant recall hearing a Metallica riff in it, but I'll give it another llisten. :p

Wow, I didn't even know who Metallica were in 85/86, I was still only listening to disposable pop back then! haha :p I think 1990 was when I first heard Metallica. "Blackened" from "...And Justice For All". Sounds weird to say it now, but at the time, I found the music very harsh and complex, and it took me a few listens to get into!

I do find it kinda ironic that people say Kirk has no talent, yet probably their two most iconic riffs "Enter Sandman" and the main riff from "Master Of Puppets" were written by him. I think Kirk is very underrated by everyone who isnt a huge fan of Metallica.

And no, of course it's not stealing if it's your own riffs! I've heard some idiots saying Metallica ''stole" from Exodus, when it was Kirk who wrote those riffs. You can't steal from yourself, that's just stupid! Also, none of the Exodus songs that featured Kirk's riffs were ever recorded for their studio albums. Until they finally recorded a proper studio version of ''Impaler'' for "Tempo Of The Damned" in 2004. I'd love to see Kirk perform live with Exodus sometime, just for a song or two. That would be awesome . :)

Damn, your post went up 3 times! Embarrassing isn't it? The song "Hell's breath" was originally an instrumental and went through some changes.Same thing with "Death Row" it's one of those 2 songs but I haven't listened to those dirty old tapes in almost 20 years!

Kirk is very talented that is so biased and stupid to say that. His leads on "kill "em All" were just lethal when I first heard it back in '83!

Gary Holt of Exodus isn't too fond of those very early tunes which is why a lot of them may never see the light of day as the band evolved as musicians. A long time ago Gary told me he wanted to do an Exodus farewell gig where they'd even play some of the Kirk tunes and maybe have Kirk jam on a song or 2 as well as other past members but since Exodus became a full time active band again that doesn't look likely.

What the hell?!  When I posted it originally, I got a message saying ''page not found'', so I thought it hadn't posted properly. Luckily I copied it while it was loading, so I just had to paste the repost. Obviously when it said ''page not found'', it had posted the post. Stupid thing! :p

I don't think I've ever heard ''Death Row". I have heard a lot the demos Kirk did with Exodus, but I don't remember hearing that one...I have heard one of the demos of "Hell's Breath", (cant remember if it was the instrumental!) along with the proper studio version of it on "Let There Be Blood". I think it would have sounded better in standard tuning with Paul or Zetro singing, but Rob Dukes does okay I guess.

Kirk is very talented! It irks me when people say he isn't a good writer, and even worse, that he isn't a very good guitar player. Being a guitar player myself, I can vouch for the fact that many of his solos are in fact, very difficult to play. Yep, he does use the wah a lot, but that's just his style. I dont think there's anything wrong with it, nor do I think he's a bad player because of it. Mike Ammot from Arch Enemy uses the wah pedal a lot in his solos, yet I don't hear the same criticsm levelled at him. It's just trendy for some metalheads to bash Metallica I guess...

I think there's a lot of good material on that very early Exodus stuff, and the fact Kirk thought some of it was good enough for Metallica is just proof of that! Also, "Impaler" I think is easily good enough that if it had been on "Bonded By Blood", it would have been just as good as the other classic songs on that album. I think perhaps the fact a lot of those songs were partly written by Kirk may be at least part of the reason why that material was never used. After all, they still played "Impaler" live sometimes, long before they finally recorded a proper studio version of it. So Gary must have thought that song at least, was a a good Exodus song. The only way I could possibly see Kirk playing live with Exodus, is if Exodus ever play any more shows with Metallica. If that ever happens, I think it would be a big missed opportunity, if Kirk doesn't join them on stage for a song or two. :(

Maybe they can sue Kirk for sounding like himself.

Some goobers did that to John Fogerty years ago because a riff in a new JF song he wrote sounded similar to a riff in a CCR song.

John was sued for "plagiarizing" himself.

I still think Lars is a douche. Downloading music is so not stealing. That is retarded! Like Lars didn't grow up learning drums from cassettes he copied off friends.
