Hello everyone. Ive been a lurker on these forums a long time and have learned quite a lot. I am currently going to school for sound design and, in my "sound synthesis" class, we are primarily using the program Metasynth to work with.I have had no previous experience with this program other than what I have read about it. It seems like some cool ass software capable of performing a wide variety of functions. Anybody have any thoughts, opinions, or experiences with it?

Amazing software. I got the chance to play with it in college a bit but never really got my head around it. Very powerful and an essential tool for doing custom synthesis.

It's good but it maintains this certain sound, I can't explain it. I also don't like the interface. That said it's dam good if you can learn your way around it.

Yes, Siegfried, that's the one. I agree the interface is a bit awkward which tends to kill any inspiration you might have while learning to work with new software. On the other hand, it does seem like if you can get a grasp of its capabilities it can be a pretty awesome tool. I guess the thing that makes it so difficult to really dive into is that its not easy to define exactly what it is. Its not a virtual instrument and its not an effects program.....but yet its capable of being both. It seems completely "open ended" and really only exists as a function of how you use it. One thing that seems pretty fun to play with is its "image synth" feature which can translate an image into sound by translating the color into sonic spatial dimensions while using the brightness to translate its amplitude. Basically, you can hear what an image sounds like by transposing the color frequencies into sound frequencies i guess. I don't know what a practical implementation of that might be but it sure sounds fun. Maybe I will translate crop circle formations into an multidimensional opus! Perhaps my goals are a bit lofty with the program? Still, sounds pretty cool to play with. Anybody else have any experience with it?

The image synth is the 1st thing I played with. The reason I ended up getting it, truth be told. Haven't had much luck getting something "musical" from it. I did however get a lot of strange unexpected noises which worked for me in the past for some industrial stuff I used to do. Crop circle's I haven't tried. Good idea.
