Hi all. It's only taken me...4 years after registering to start posting? I've heard alot of good things about RC from Demilich (Matt) over the years, so I figured I'd start posting a bit and where better to start than a thread about one of my favourite bands?

I'd go with Monumension. I've noticed with Below the Lights that sometimes I find myself losing interest almost immediately after The Dead Stare ends and I'd rather be listening to something else (which ends up being something else from Enslaved). Even Havenless which many hold in high regard doesn't really catch my attention.

Well, since Jon here always bugs me about listening to Enslaved,

I think I'll actually do it for once! Downloading Monumension now
I guess I should get BtL too so I can formulate an opinion for you fags to ignore.

Welcome to the forum.

For the past few months, I've been rigorously going through the band's back catalogue chronologically, spending at least a week on each album. This band sort of lost me with Isa (though I remember digging that album), so I figured it was time to catch up. So far I'm up to Below The Lights -- the first Enslaved I ever heard.

I'll have a bigger writeup later, but I'll drop a few quick observations:
- Vikingligr Veldi is probably their best. This one never clicked with me in the past, maybe because it seems like a very different band from the later version.
- Their albums sort of become a blur after a while. Let's call it the no-album-should-ever-be-longer-than-50-minutes syndrome. This is partially what makes Below the Lights more successful than, say, Mardraum. I've listened to the back half of the latter maybe a dozen times in my life and I still can't recall a single riff from it.
- Blodhemn is underrated.
- "793" is still the best song they ever made. Second place? "Sigmundskvadet." I wish they'd done more shit like that.

Here are my ratings so far:
Yggdrasil = 7/10
Hordanes Land = 7.5/10
Vikingligr Veldi = 8.5/10
Frost = 7.5/10
Eld = 8/10
Blodhemn = 7.5/10
Mardraum = 8/10
Monumension = 8.5/10

What do I have to anticipate/dread post-Isa?

Ruun is a more accessible isa. I like it.
Vertebrae is awful.
Axioma is very good
Rittir is just....there.

I like btl a lot now. Monumension and mardraum are the best. Frost, eld and blodhemn dont do much for me anymore.
