hey, i live about three blocks from the New Balance central offices/factory. everyone wears them around here! local pride and shit.

i didn't know that new balance was boston based so i totally didn't get them for any real "local pride" reason. I bought them at Mickey Finn's on the Berlin Turnpike. They fit my ideal sneaker description of "black and cheap."

My old band Kwisatz Haderach had such a prevalence of those sneakers we became known as "New Balance Haderach". Shortly before we became "Knick Knack Paddywack".

But the New Balance obssession is also a vegan thing, which explains the emo connection. Certain models are entirely leather-free.
