My impression of Necrophagist at band practice:

guy one: Okay, so I've got an idea! Here's a sweep picking lick... but LET'S USE IT AS A RIFF
guy two: YEAH! and then I can go hardcore on my drumkit and BEAT AND BEAT AND BEAT
Guy three: and I can be a bass player!
guy one: and then after sweep picking riff we can go to the 5th inversion of the iolean modal and do an open jam in 17/16 time!
guy three: this is gonna be fucking sweet

I agree with you. The first album lacked a lot of structure and was just a series of technical riffs after technical riffs. The second one shows a lot more structure though.

I like necrophagist too. Gorguts is fucking incredible though. Most people cant handle them because there so insanely technical, its absurd at times.

Agreed, the guy almost sound like he's in an hardcore band. The music is godly though, especially with songs like Warp Zone and Virtual Emotion.
