Should the word be censored. Either way I don't think it should be designated to a single races' use. Why should blacks being able to call eachother my pals? I mean it's not like you hear jews calling other jews kikes.

There are too many different aspects to what I think that I cannot say I have one single, solid opinion on censorship. As for the word "my pals" It's an antiquated term that has been warped in the last decade from degrading slang to a friendly association (but only among black people). I think it's retarded. I don't know, though, I think a lot of black people still find it offensive even if it is said by other black people. And after all, no matter what context it is used in, just using that word in the first place to refer to anyone else implies that the person saying it is uneducated and crude, no matter what color they are. Still, you can't prevent someone from saying what they want to say. Freedom of speech is something we Americans hold near and dear to us, even if it means freedom to talk like an idiot.

I'm not really in favour of censoring any words. The whole point of freedom of speech is that people are allowed to say things that other people don't want to hear. Nice words don't really need protection. What needs protection is the spiteful words, the critical words, the hateful and bigoted words. The words and statements that everybody wants to silence are exactly the ones that should be defended with the greatest vigour by anyone who dares to claim they support free speech.

I don't think that word should be censored; otherwise Bill Cosby has less things to complain about.

More black people need to break the stereotype. Personally, I've only met one black person that is intelligent enough to have a civilized conversation with.

I wouldn't know really. I've got a black friend from Africa, and as you all know a black person from Africa is different from a black person from America. He's a champion, although we might have differences in music taste, he still holds interesting civilised conversations and is pretty intelligent himself. He also satires the abuse of the word "my pals". He hates it as well, but he makes jokes about it to take the piss. He also doesn't mind it when the rest of the group of friends say it.

There's no real need to censor the word my pals, we already have to put up with the word "gook", "sand my pals", "pommy bastard" and other racial derogotary terms. There's also no need for black people to take the word seriously, because after all, why the double standard bullshit, they use it as freely as all of us use the word "fuck". I believe freedom of speech and expression to some extent, because no matter where we go, we'll get offended or hurt, we just gotta get the fuck over it.

Sorry if this is too philosophical and off topic but words are merely words. They only represent feelings or thoughts but can't truly express them.

lol freedom of speech. Freedom of speech doesnt only mean you can say my pals.

It means a lot lot lot more than that.

I dont think people should expose there children to such things.

I would never use the word myself except in jokes, and its not like without freedom of speech we wouldnt use the word. freedom of speech isnt about using cuss words and stuff. Most countries dont have Freedon of speech and omg guess what, people use such slang there as well.

well it's a really stupid and racist thing to say, and it demeans blacks, if you still say it knowing these things then doesn't it mean you're stupid for saying it?

Find me one person that would be considered educated frequently and seriously uses the word please.

And please shed some light as to why you dont think it should be censored? I agree, but why?

"Words are not indispensible to cognition. They are only necessary when we wish to communicate our ideas to others or to prove to them that we have attained cognition. " -some jew I think

I guess it doesn't really fit in this instance but that is where I'm coming from.

"my pals" and racial enmity are both symptomatic of a larger problem, banning "my pals" wouldn't accomplish anything, probably, it would agitate the latter.

now that's what i call a sentence. ;)

If the word my pals were to be censored, it would have to include the use of the word by ALL people, that includes blacks. If you say that one group of people can say a word and another can't, then that is racism itself. I find it hypocritical that blacks are offended by a word that they themselves use ALL the time to refer to each other. .
A movie that I saw recently "The Human Stain" portrays an interesting situation: a university professor refers to a female student as a "spook" since he never sees her in class, the professor uses the word to mean phantom or ghost (the student never attends class and is invisible, like a ghost). But the student in question is black and takes great offense at being called a spook since it is also a term used for black people and accuses the professor of racism. The absurdity of this situation mirrors the debate over the use of the word my pals since noone can agree as to what it means, to some, a deragotory term, to others, a mere adjective.

i was going to write a retort but i am feeling sleepy :(

You can say what you want with the freedom of speech in America or where ever BUT you must also pay consequences for what you say. All things you do and say have consequenses with the action/reaction.
I some how don't think that the forefathers of america had the intention people seem to use it for in this day and age.
Anyway I am not american and dont live in the USA so it doesnt apply to me anyway.

I am a caucasian male. I also have a Japanese wife. I also live in Alabama and my state has a high percentage of black Americans. I really don't care for the term, and it offends me when used the wrong way. Having said that, I also disagree with "African American". How many black people do you know that are from Africa ? I work with one guy that is from Africa, but all the other black Americans I know were born in America. I am not a British American, I am just an American.
I don't see a problem with calling someone "white" or "black" when one needs to be descriptive. I need a tan, but I am not anymore "white" than someone who is "black" is actually black. I am not loyal to England or wherever the hell my ancestors are from. Why should black people be loyal to Africa ? Most people over there are poor and uneduacted.

Personally, as long as you are not using it in an offensive way, I really don't care if people use it. Now, if you are using it as a way to offend someone, then I have a problem with you.

I hope the world ends and humanity drives itself to extinction ^_^
