MYSTIC PROPHECY - REGRESSUS
Nuclear Blast - 2003
By Rodrigo Escandon
Featuring members from various other bands such as Dream Evil and Valleys Eve, Mystic Prophecy have come out with an album that should satisfy the power metal loving fan but those who are looking for a little more originality and variety would be advised to look somewhere else.
First, there is no denying the talent of the band. Singer R.D. has a great voice and the riffs by Gus G. are top notch and there are definite moments where I was totally rocking out to this album like with the song Calling From Hell and Eternal Flame but these are the first couple of songs on the album. As the album progressed my attention span was lost. Either I have heard this sort of music from other bands or it seemed to me that in Regressus the band was repeating itself. Lords of Pain is a very heavy song and has a great riff during the chorus but when almost the last 1:30 is the chorus repeating itself over and over then we have a problem and this is not just one case, it happens in other songs like Sign of the Cross, In Your Sins and even one that I liked, Eternal Flame. Finally, at 12 songs (even though one is an instrumental that is less than a minute long) Regressus seems a little long too. By the end of the album, I just usually totally zoned out.
Maybe it has to take a lot of effort, originality or the album just simply has to click for me to be impressed with a power metal album. I have been simply burnt out with this genre over the last years that much that I used to enjoy before I just do not like anymore. I could see myself enjoying this album 3 or 4 years ago but by now a power metal band, especially a newer band, really has to shine in order for me to enjoy the album.
