A friend of mine mailed with Zeuss on gearslutz and he told him that uses one sm57 on axis and the md421 on axis (both on the same speaker) most of the time....

Bob Rock and Randy Staub used the combination of 57-421-121 in Metallica records I think..

I think some of the newer Dream Theater Cd's /Train of thought onwards) are 57 with 421...at least i remember reading from petrucci in the petrucciforum.com that this is his favorite Mic combo.

.. the weird thing about that is I really LOVE their tone ... but I am not a huge fan of a 121 or 122 for guitars ... for some reason.

You have to blend with em, or set the amp really bright to make the most out of a ribbon in SOME cases. Ribbons take high shelves SUPER well, so you can knock up the bite that way. I always put my ribbons dead center as well.
