i've always found the sole existence of national spelling bees pretty funny but that's probably because my own language is by its spelling very straightforward and doesn't leave much for interpretation. in other words, competitions like that wouldn't be much of a challenge for anyone.

don't think there are spelling competitions anywhere but in the US, but i might be wrong - somebody feel free to correct me here if that's the case

There are in Venezuela but only in English class, Spanish is way too easy to spell cause they read exactly how they write, there's no room for separate interpretation (as apparently is in your language as well)

I still think that spelling bees are really strange, at least that they are sooo huge in the USA.
I am not sure if there's anything like that in Germany, never thought about it :D

There are huge competitions in French language and they are actually super difficult. Our dictionnary is so full of words with unspoken letters, or lists of words from specific slangs etc. There used to be a popular one that was broadcast on TV, live, and people used to enjoy trying to follow it at home. I remember trying it, and the last "levels" were insane, I had no clue how to spell some of them even though I have a good intuition for that in my language. Nowadays, I don't think there is any of those competition popular anymore. I haven't heard of one in ages.

I also find it odd that spelling bees are televised on ESPN. I never thought of them as a "sport".
