A little under 5 1/2 actually, but still, a damn long time considering their aforementioned popularity/hype!

yeah, it's been a long time, they had some problems with some of their former members
but I hope they will release something soon, and I hope to listen to some nice 7 string stuff and Engl sounds.
The problem is, I think I will hear just uber-technical stuff, no "catchy" songs (yeah I know, that's no good word
to describe stuff like necrophagist)

According to Wikipedia (yes i like to frequent wikipedia) the new album will be out next year and "Muhammed himself will be recording with a new custom shop Ibanez Xiphos guitar with 7 strings, as well as 27 frets."

I kinda get what you mean by this, there were a couple of songs that weren't "catchy" but there was something in the song that hooked you...

Jesus I had no idea it was that long ago.

Like Tesseract maybe? Perfection standing in the way of end product.

I spoke to the guys last year (christmas time) and they said that the record was nearly written and that this year would be used for recording.

Stephan (the bassist?) is a total anal freak when it comes to recording, and from what I've heard it's all live - single take. No edits.
The old bassist from the Rotted was recalling some AWESOME stories about the guy when they recorded with him..

So if Mu is anything like that, no wonder it's taking a year to record.. it will melt faces when it's out though.

haven't they said the same thing like 2 years ago?

i remember an interview in 2008 saying that they'll use the upcoming 2009 USA tour and the europe festivals to promote their new album (meaning that it'll be out by then).
then in 2009, they played the USA tour, and then canceled the euro shows (e.g. summer breeze festival) to *record* their new album!

besides, i've been told from a very reliable source that they spent most of the studio time for the last album to track stuff....there's hardly any riff that's actually played all the way through, often it's a measure by one!

i'm in no way taking away of the greatness that is necrophagist...especially epitaph is kicking my ass HARD.
still, i definitely think that perfection does indeed stand in their way.

my thoughts go somewhere along the lines of this: they write songs, which are undoubtably great, then there's another recent release of high caliber tech death bands such as obscura for example, and they go like "we got to top that!". after all, there's a lot of fame involved, and they really have a name to loose if the new album doesn't kick everythings ass as their last two records did.
